Spark your child’s creativity and fuel their love of art this summer with ArtBreak Camps at the Art Gallery of Alberta! Your 6 to 17-year-old can spend a full week this July or August enjoying art activities, imaginative exercises, and a variety of exciting creative projects and excursions.
Art – it’s something kids naturally love! The freedom to experiment, the excitement of exploration, and the pride in a finished product. Each AGA ArtBreak Camp empowers aspiring artists to take the lead in the creative process and discover the world around them through their own artistic lens. Focused on student interactions and personal experiences, these camps seek to build a connection between art, ideas, and community.
ArtBreak Camps at the Art Gallery of Alberta include a range of fun and inspiring themes from nature, history, and design, to science and comics. Each week of artful adventures will offer viewing of the current exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Alberta, experimentation in the studio, and exploration of the art, neighbourhoods, and green spaces around the gallery. You never know where you might find inspiration, so many of the camps also include excursions and artmaking at local attractions!
ArtBreak Camps for Kids Ages 6-12
July 6-10 | Sketching Club
Explore and capture the beauty of North America’s largest urban green space! Young artists will be encouraged to sketch en plein air, drawing inspiration from the people, architecture and nature found in the river valley spaces and neighbourhoods surrounding the art gallery. Back at the AGA, sketches will be transformed into finished artworks using artistic materials like paint, clay and print.
July 13-17 | Art Zoo (Excursion)
Explore the animal world with this fun camp that takes place at the Art Gallery and the Edmonton Valley Zoo! Campers will get to draw, paint, and sculpt their favourites from the animal kingdom, then get up close with real-life versions while enjoying artmaking and games at the Zoo.
July 20-24 | Comics Camp
Learn all about the art of comics – from the basics of figure drawing and composition through to character and story development! This week of cartooning fun will have campers working with 2-D and 3-D materials to create their own collection of comic-inspired art.
July 27-31 | Art and Sports (Excursion)
Build your strength and creativity at this energetic camp. Explore the world of sports with gallery tours, hands-on art projects, and outdoor fun. Discover how artists find ideas in sports and movement, then try out experimental drawing, action painting, and sculpture in the studio. After that, head outside for walks, games, and creative play at the Kinsmen Sports Centre and River Valley.
August 10-14 | Cultivating Creativity (Excursion)
Let your imagination grow in the garden-themed studio and at unique locations such as the Muttart Conservatory and the University of Alberta Botanic Gardens. Throughout the week, the Educators will guide you as you find inspiration in nature and create art using eco-friendly materials and techniques.
August 17-21 | Artist Innovators
Discover how art and design inspire one another with this combination art studio, maker space, and tinker lab! This camp week will be dedicated to problem-solving and design thinking, with artists and designers to help campers dream up BIG IDEAS and build models and prototypes to test in the real world.
ArtBreak Camps for Teens Ages 13-17
July 13-17 | Portfolio Prep
Have you ever thought about becoming an artist? The AGA camp leaders have real experience and connections in the art world. They will help you learn what art schools and galleries look for in a portfolio and guide you as you create projects that show off your talent.
August 10-14 | Illustration
Work alongside some very talented artists and illustrators to create your own works of graphic fiction! Campers will let loose as they experiment with illustration and drawing techniques, mixed media collage, and silkscreen to create their own unique posters, zines, graphic novel concepts, and more.
