Spark your child’s creativity and fuel their love of art this summer with ArtBreak Camps at the Art Gallery of Alberta! Your 6 to 17-year-old is invited to spend a full week this July or August enjoying art activities, imaginative exercises, and a variety of exciting creative projects and excursions.

Art – it’s something kids naturally love! The freedom to experiment, the excitement of exploration, and the pride in a finished product. Each AGA ArtBreak Camp empowers aspiring artists to take the lead in the creative process and discover the world around them through their own artistic lens. Focused on student interactions and personal experiences, these camps seek to build a connection between art, ideas, and community.

ArtBreak Camps at the Art Gallery of Alberta include a range of fun and inspiring themes from nature, history, and design, to science and comics. Each week of artful adventures will offer viewing of the current exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Alberta, experimentation in the studio, and exploration of the art, neighbourhoods, and green spaces around the gallery. You never know where you might find inspiration, so many of the camps also include excursions and artmaking at local attractions!

ArtBreak Camps for Ages 6-12

July 8-12 | Comics Camp
Learn all about the art of comics – from the basics of figure drawing and composition through to character and story development! This week of cartooning fun with have campers working with 2-D and 3-D materials to create their own collection of comic-inspired art.

July 15-19 | Art Zoo (Excursion)
Explore the animal world with this fun camp that takes place at the Art Gallery and the Edmonton Valley Zoo! Campers will get to draw, paint, and sculpt their favourites from the animal kingdom, then get up close with real-life versions while enjoying artmaking and games at the Zoo.

July 22-26 | Horse Camp (Excursion)
Equine enthusiasts will love this popular combination camp featuring art activities and horse riding! Campers will move from studio to stable as they draw, paint, and sculpt horses, create art en plain air in the great outdoors, and saddle up for fun with the horses.

July 29-August 2 | Artist Innovators
Learn how art and design inspire one another with this combination art studio, maker space, and tinker lab! This camp week will be dedicated to problem solving and design thinking, with artists and designers to help campers dream up BIG IDEAS and build models and prototypes to test in the real world.

August 12-16 | Time Travellers (Excursion)
Discover art past and present in this exciting time-travelling camp! Campers will delve into concepts of time and space as they explore current exhibitions in the Gallery and enjoy an excursion to Fort Edmonton Park. Using inspiration from past styles, methods, and materials, they will also create their own timeless works of art throughout the week.

August 19-23 | Art Lab (Excursion)
This investigative camp will explore the science of art and the art of science! It will feature a bit of everything under the STEAM umbrella, with colour experiments, bio-art explorations, robotic drawing, and video installations. The experience will be enhanced by visits to the TELUS World of Science – Edmonton and the Royal Alberta Museum where campers will get to go behind the scenes to learn about the science of museums.

ArtBreak Camps for Ages 13-17

Jul 15-19 | Photography
Teens with a keen eye for photography will love this explorative camp that lets them try variety of photographic processes and techniques. Here they will learn about the history and evolution of photography, consider concepts like lighting, framing, and composition, and be inspired by other artists through the current exhibitions at the Gallery. Please note that students are advised to bring their own digital camera for this camp.

August 12-16 | Graphic Fiction (ages 13-17)
Work alongside some very talented artists and illustrators to create your own works of graphic fiction! Campers will let loose as they experiment with illustration and drawing techniques, mixed media collage, and silkscreen to create their own unique posters, zines, and graphic novel concepts.

Registration is now open for all camps on the AGA website! Space is limited to 16 campers per session, so don’t miss out. Camp fees include all artistic materials and excursion admissions, with reduced pricing for those who have an Art Gallery of Alberta Membership.
