In September, my son and I were able to join the Get Outside! Kids Club with Wildernook at Hyde Park in Saskatoon. This monthly program will have opportunities for families with kids between 6 and 13 (and their caregiver) to learn about all things nature and green space in Saskatoon. You can register each month for the upcoming event. Each month will have different themes.

The theme of our September experience was birds. We met up with all the rest of the families at Hyde Park. A side note about this park, it is a naturalized area that includes wetlands. It is the perfect place to watch birds and a great place to explore in Saskatoon. After an introduction, we were divided into three different groups that rotated to the different areas.

We had a lot of fun learning about birds and comparing wing size, strength and speed to the kids and adults. We read a book about some bird facts as well. This was a great activity to use up some of our children’s energy while learning new things. The kids were excited to learn about birds in a new way.

Our next stop was to learn about bird behaviours. We were given a checklist to find some of the behaviours of birds like flying above us, calling to us, sitting in the water and more. They also had some bird facts set out for the kids to find with the binoculars. She also had binoculars for the kids and adults to use.

The final stop of the day was another win with the kids. They got to learn how birds eat. They worked together and examined photos of birds and the different beaks they all have. They got to try different tools to dig in dirt, water and more. They compared the tools and instruments they had to the beaks in the photo. My son said this was his favourite part. They got to catch bugs in the air, use a nutcracker and try to survive with different beaks.
