We went to Theatre in the Park: The Reel Whirled over the weekend and had so much fun. We have never been able to make it to a Theatre in the Park before even though we’ve always wanted to but we’ve been stopped in previous years because of smoke in the air, weather, or a dreaded cold. Sum Theatre has been bringing joy to Saskatoon communities with Theatre in the Park for 12 seasons. They travel across parks in Saskatoon (and Regina) to share a different show each year. These performances are perfect for all ages. If you’re worried your child will be loud during the performance, worry not, the action and songs will enthrall them. Your little wiggly ones will have many chances for movement and participation during the performance. This is coming from a mom of a son who never stops moving. Because it’s in a park, the children have plenty of room to play before and after.

We rode our bikes to the park in Hampton and found a nice seat for ourselves right up front. We brought a blanket to sit on but you can bring anything that will make you comfortable. They had a section for people to sit with blankets in front and lawn chairs in the back rows. The Hampton Village Community Association was hosting and had 90s-themed candy for all the guests.

The Reel Whirled is a production created by Sum Theatre, that takes the audience with the characters on a journey through the online world. You come out of the performance learning about why it’s important to balance our lives online and offline. While we learn important lessons, the audience is also entertained by songs, dancing and 90s-themed characters.

There are many moments throughout the performance for kids to move around and join in the actions. In the middle of the show, they invited the kids up to have a dance party with them. My son showed Meow Meow (performed by Jenna Berenbaum) his own made-up dance moves and they did them together for the audience. He was SO happy to participate and I’m sure all the children loved getting up to move around and stretch those little legs.

Theatre in the Park had us moving around and dancing to the songs. It was a wonderful afternoon at the park and we were thankful for a friendly cast of characters and a truly lovely day outside.

We had such a wonderful time and plan to go again to a performance in our neighbourhood as well. Theatre in the Park is travelling across the city this May and June. You can find the locations here.
