What do you get when you combine William Shakespeare, 16th-century gender norms, comedy, music and poetry?

A thought-provoking, hilarious, and important show! Carousel Theatre for Young People’s presentation of “I Am William” illuminates how exceptionally talented women are often forgotten in history books because the tomes are written by men. But what if some of the most famous men in history were supported by and, perhaps, granted their gifts by the women who surrounded them? In this tale, written by Rébecca Déraspe, A theatre le Clou Production, co-presented with Théâtre la Seizième, William Shakespeare has a wonderfully talented sister, Margaret, who yearns to be a serious writer. Unfortunately, it is expected that she (and other girls in her time) concern themselves only with domestic duties so as not to arouse suspicion that she is literate or an intellect. Margaret feels her dreams of being a serious writer hang in the balance until a plan is conceived.

Margaret’s brother William is a terrible writer but wants to be an actor on stage. Together, they concoct a plan to ensure they both get what they want, but only one can take credit for the outstanding poems and plays. With friends in high places, William’s status rises and his popularity grows. This lighthearted show weaves comedy, song, and poignant moments together that will delight children and adults alike. “I Am William” addresses the age-old question of whether Shakespeare did or didn’t write his plays, and adds a fun element to suggest that maybe the truth is somewhere in between.
