Welcome the Year of the Rabbit with interactive performances, educational workshops and a sweet sampling that will delight the senses. Halifax Shopping Centre will be celebrating the Lunar New Year in a big way with these fantastic events and more.
The Lunar New Year, or Chinese New Year, marks the beginning of a new cycle in the lunar calendar and the transition between zodiac signs. In 2023, celebrations begin on Sunday, January 22nd and continue for several days thereafter. We will be welcoming the Year of the Rabbit, and that means there is plenty to celebrate! As you can imagine, rabbits represent luck which, according to tradition, means this year we can expect success, peace, and harmony.
The Halifax Shopping Centre in partnership with Halitube, an organization that aims to connect Asian communities to local communities within Atlantic Canada, will be hosting several memorial events and installations to help Halifax celebrate this occasion. Festivities will kick off on January 22nd with a Dragon Dance under the Halifax Shopping Centre skylight on level 3. There will be two opportunities to catch this traditional Chinese dance with performances taking place at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. During this time, there will also be a chance to learn a creative new skill with a live calligraphy session and teaching table, which will generously be accepting donations for Feed Nova Scotia. Calligraphy is considered supreme among the visual arts in China and is a traditional form of writing through the use of ink and a brush.
In addition to these events, there will be several sweet samplings under the skylight during 1:00 pm-3:00 pm from January 27th-29th. This will allow you to find your perfect pairing of Lindt chocolate while you discover your Chinese Zodiac Sign at HSC’s Lunar New Year installation. Don’t forget to snap an instagrammable photo with the beautiful cherry bloom arch and use #shopHSC.
