Across Nova Scotia every October, Mi’kmaq History Month is celebrated, and community activities and events share and showcase Mi’kmaw history. This year’s theme is A’tukwemk aq A’tukowinu’k – Storytelling and Storytellers. Everyone is encouraged and welcome to participate.

How to Participate in Mi’kmaq History Month

  • Visit Mi’kmaw History Month’s website to read about their history, watch videos and see a list of events happening across the province.
  • Follow Treaty Education Nova Scotia on Facebook as they do 31 days of ‘Did you know’ about Mi’kmaw history
  • Read Out of the Depths: The Experiences of Mi’kmaw Children at the Indian Residential School at Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia by Isabelle Knockwood, and other memoirs by survivors.
  • Learn about the Mi’kmaw communities whose land you live on and visit the three First Nations in Halifax Regional Municipality.
  • Visit Indigenous cultural heritage sites to learn about the traditions, culture, and resilience of your local communities.
  • Visit the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre, and Peace and Friendship Park in Halifax.
  • Support Mi’kmaq artists, drummers, singers, dancers, language learners and small business owners. They are helping communities heal.
