Explore the great outdoors this winter with Kids Run Wild Winter Programs. Orienteering is a fun and valuable skill for all members of your family and provides physical and mental skills that are crucial to success. At Kids Run Wild, children are encouraged to build their independence and navigational skills so they can explore and experience nature safely and confidently. With maps that can be tailored to experience and age, families can spend quality time together outdoors in an environment that is tailored to their individual needs.Kids Run Wild- Winter Article

Coached by Dorothy Penner, Kids Run Wild is the youth and family division of the Edmonton Overlanders Orienteering Club (EOOC). In 2023 alone, Kids Run Wild won three distinguished awards for programming, including The Practice Award for Best Outdoor Play Program in Canada (2023), the Best Outdoor Pursuits and Fitness Programme 2023- Western Canada, and the GHP Fitness and Nutrition Award for Best Children’s Outdoor Pursuits and Fitness Programme (2023).

But what IS Orienteering? Orienteering is a sport that involves using a detailed map and compass to help you navigate terrain and locate specific points in nature.  At Kids Run Wild, families will learn navigation, map reading skills, and terrain interpretation in a fun and collaborative way. In addition to these critical skills, participants will increase their physical fitness, agility and and self-confidence. Outdoor games and activities will be woven into each session as a way to build community and foster a positive atmosphere. While orienteering can be a highly competitive sport, Kids Run Wild focuses on skill development and personal challenges instead of group competition. Those looking for more of a challenge will have the opportunity to work alongside groups of similar skills.
