Brighten your night and warm your heart this winter with the Luminaria winter light festival at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden! Newly reimagined with an enchanting A Winter Garden Story theme, this year’s festival draws inspiration from the warm, bustling atmosphere of alpine holiday markets. Whether a visit to the festival is part of your annual traditions or a brand new experience for your family, there is an abundance of delightful tastes, sights, sounds, and surprises to be discovered!

Luminaria University of Alberta Botanic Gardens

Luminaria is unlike any other holiday event in the Edmonton area. Come wander the snowy paths, illuminated by candlelight, firelight, and starlight. Enjoy the quiet beauty of thousands of glimmering candles along the pathways of the Kurimoto Japanese Garden, or take a ride through the forest on the Woodland Express train. As you make your way through the Gardens, warm yourself with a free apple cider and keep your eyes peeled for a glimpse of the whimsical Snow Sprites or the captivating Snow Queen. There’s a touch of winter magic around every turn!

Luminaria University Botanic Garden

Luminaria: A Winter Garden Story offers up several new whimsical elements and has been made more affordable for families with FREE admission for kids aged 12 and under. Careful consideration has been put into making this year’s festival even more kid-friendly, but guests of all ages will find delight in each of these unique experiences:

The Chalet
Your journey will start in a cozy chalet that will welcome you with all the scents, sounds and tastes of winter. Be sure to treat yourself to some Alpine-inspired food and drink to warm up before you set out on your garden adventure.

Village Square
The spirit of the Alpine Holiday Market is captured at the Village Square. Here, at the heart of the festival, guests are invited to gather to eat, drink and gather under a canopy of festive lights. Find seasonal treats, beverages, entertainment and more at this beer-garden-style plaza.

The Woodland Express
Next, climb aboard the winter train to take an enchanted ride through the forest and get a sneak peek of Sprites Hollow. Firepits and seating at each end of the trail will ensure everyone stays warm and cozy as you wait for your turn on The Woodland Express!

Luminaria
This quintessential Luminaria experience includes a peaceful winter walk through the Kurimoto Japanese Garden, where candles light the pathways. As part of the Luminaria tradition, guests will also be invited to light their own candle in honour of a loved one.

Winter Queen’s Royal Garden
At the Royal Garden, guests of all ages are cordially invited to come meet the Winter Queen and take a photo aboard her spectacular sleigh. Everyone will enjoy exploring this interactive Garden space while the dazzling Winter Queen watches over it during its deep winter slumber.

Sprites Hollow
Sprites Hollow is the snowy home of the loveable snow sprites’! They are excited to play with you and help share your holiday wishes.

Alpine Garden
This charming winter diorama featuring tiny wooden cabins lining the hills, while animal grazing nearby. Have your camera ready for this picturesque display!

Luminaria at the Alberta Botanic Garden

Visit Luminaria on select evenings between November 23, 2022 and December 31, 2022 to experience all the magic and wonder of the holiday season! Register for a staggered entry time between 5:00 pm – 8:30 pm, and take advantage of the gardens being open until 10 pm nightly.

Tickets to Luminaria must be purchased in advance and will not be available at the door. Your time slot will be selected at time of purchase. This event always sells out so be sure to purchase tickets in advance to avoid disappointment!
