June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada. Coinciding with the Summer Solstice on June 20—the longest day of the year—it has long been a time of cultural celebration for Indigenous communities. The day was officially recognized with its current name in 2017.

Amiskwacîwâskahikan, also known as Edmonton, is located on Treaty 6 Territory, and is home to the second largest Indigenous population in Canada including the Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Sioux and Métis People. Everyone is invited to celebrate and learn more about the history and culture of our city’s rich Indigenous population by attending one of the great events below.

There are also many places to go for a walk and appreciate Indigenous artworks around our city! Two of our family’s favourites are ᐄᓃᐤ (ÎNÎW) River Lot 11∞ Indigenous Art Park and Tawatinâ Bridge.
