The Arden Theatre invites you to an extraordinary theatrical experience this February during Songs My Mother Never Sung Me by Dave Clarke. This touching musical piece is perfect for families, exploring the relationship between a deaf mom and her hearing child as they discover unique ways to communicate with each other. It is a simple tale of a boy and his mom, layered with complexity and deeper meaning for those who “listen” for it.
Songs My Mother Never Sung Me is humorous and heart-filled, based on playwright and composer Dave Clarke’s own life experiences growing up as a child navigating through the hearing world with deaf parents. It is a unique chamber opera performed and sung in a combination of English and American Sign Language (ASL) without surtitles or interpretation. This creative juxtaposition encourages inclusion and invites audience members of all ages to explore the diverse ways we can communicate with one another.
