On the eve of Valentine’s Day, drama and delicacy are intertwined as soprano Janelle Lucyk and mezzo-soprano Sarah Myatt explore music of love. Baroque aria’s stemming from some of history’s most celebrated romantic figures, Cesar and Cleopatra, Orpheus and Eurydice, with a hearty main course of Monteverdi duets. The pieces chosen fall under seconda prattica or stile moderno style, where music is governed by its text, and lavish musical ornamentation is enjoyed to better highlight poetry. As such, on February 13th, hear exquisite sets of poetry which underlay art songs by composers including Purcell, Dowland, and Handel, revealing raw human emotions: love, jealousy, desire.
