Guinness, green beer, and Irish pubs, it is no wonder that we often associate St. Patrick’s Day celebrations with the 19+ crowd. While there is no shortage of THAT type of fun to be had in Halifax, there is also plenty of stuff you can do to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with kids! We have compiled a list of ways to celebrate the holiday with young ones at home, and we included the best family-friendly St. Patrick’s Day events happening in HRM.

Attend a local event

St. Patrick’s Day Parade – Grab your friends and family, find your spot to watch the parade,  and get your green on. The parade will feature music, dancers, Irish groups and will be fun for the whole family.

St. Patrick’s Day Events at Halifax Public Libraries–  celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with performances crafts and snack across Halifax Library locations.

Celebrate at home

Irish Music Dance Party – Did someone say dance party? Count me in! You will find an endless  amount of Irish music playlists on Spotify and YouTube. Watch Irish dancing videos and pick up a few new moves to practice around the house.

Craft time – It’s time to break out the construction paper and safety scissors, and put your creativity to the test. Provide an invitation to play with googly eyes, ribbons, beads, tissue paper and any other arts and crafts items you may have lying around the house. Think leprechauns, shamrocks and pots of gold.

Cook a traditional Irish meal –  Wondering what to make for supper? Why not stay on theme and prepare an Irish dish?  Soda bread, Irish stew or corn beef hash, there are so many traditional Irish meals that the whole family will love.

Go Green

Wear it
It is tradition to wear head to toe green on St. Patricks Day, but do you know why? Leprechauns. Wear green or risk getting pinched. Irish folklore says that wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns, which like to pinch anyone they can see. Ouch!

Eat it
Get out the green food colouring and have some fun. Put a splash in a glass of milk or a clear carbonated drink. Make a healthy green smoothie, or look up a recipe for green coloured punch. If dessert is more your thing, you can make green pancakes or Rice Krispie treats. Maybe add a splash of food colouring to to some vanilla ice cream and mix it up marble slab-style, or just keep it simple with mint chocolate chip ice cream.
