Immerse yourself in the captivating history of the Gulf of Georgia Cannery with Summer Experience Tours!
Discover the fascinating world of canning, where the once-thriving fishing industry played a pivotal role in shaping Steveston’s culture and heritage. Situated atop wooden pilings over the mighty Fraser River, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery is one of the few restored 19th-century salmon canneries remaining in BC. In its heyday, the Cannery was the largest building of its kind and the leading producer of canned salmon in BC. Now a dynamic fishing museum, step inside and experience the sights, sounds, and stories of the West Coast fishing industry.
The Cannery Summer Experience Tours provide a unique opportunity to tour the Cannery with knowledgeable guides and gain insight into the lives of the workers who toiled here. Three separate and individual tours await visitors: Cannery People, Herring Reduction Plant, and a Machine Demo.ย Your costumed interpreters will share captivating stories and anecdotes that bring the history of the Cannery alive. Learn about the lives of the Cannery People who lived and worked at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery. As you wander through the preserved machinery, vintage fishing boats, and interactive displays, you will gain a deeper appreciation for the challenges and successes of those who contributed to the industry’s growth. Walking through the Herring Reduction Plant, you will learn about the importance of herring on the West Coast and how it was processed at the Cannery. Those who love historical technology will appreciate seeing a Machine Demo of a restored 1930s-1950s era canning line in action!
Beyond the exhibits, the Cannery Summer Experience Tours offer a range of engaging activities for visitors of all ages.ย Use a โpeughโ to sort salmon at the fish bins, try boat-spotting from the dock on the Steveston Harbour, or be the captain of your own fishing boat in the Model Wheelhouse.
