Celebrate the vibrant tapestry of the world at the Surrey Fusion Festival! This FREE family-friendly festival, back for its 17th year, is the ultimate celebration of food, music, and culture, and takes place at Holland Park on July 20 & 21, 2024.
If you’ve always dreamed of taking your family on a trip around the world to experience different cultures, but can’t swing the cost or time off, the Surrey Fusion Festival is a great way to give a little taste of various cultures. Experience the 2024 theme, “Landmarks of the World” by visiting one of the 50 cultural pavilions from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, as they showcase the best in traditions, food, and arts from their country.
From around the world to right here at home, your family will love visiting and learning more about local Indigenous culture in the Indigenous Village. Visit the 30′ Teepee to participate in workshops from Indigenous educators and healers, and take in dancing, storytelling, and contemporary music on the Siam Stage. Budding musicians will enjoy the Indigenous Songwriter’s Circle where accomplished musicians Darren Harry, Cheri Maracle, Wayne Lavallee, Marc Merilainen, and Billie Joel Green will share their experiences and perspectives as Indigenous songwriters.
My favourite part of any festival is the food, and there is plenty of that to go around at the Surrey Fusion Festival! In addition to the many flavours and dishes visitors can try throughout the Pavilions, the Cultural Cooking Area is one place the whole family will love! On Saturday, July 20th, youth from across Surrey will go head-to-head in a Cooking Showdown in front of a live audience as they prepare their favourite dishes and tackle challenges given to them. If you’re hoping to increase your own culinary skills, you won’t want to miss Sunday, July 21, where professional (and celebrity!) chefs will demonstrate how to make traditional and contemporary dishes. Again, entrance to the entire festival is FREE and if you’re a foodie, this is the learning opportunity of a lifetime!
While teens and tweens will enjoy the cultural experience, families with younger kids often need some hands-on, interactive activities to keep the kids busy. The Surrey Fusion Festival offers an exceptional Kids Zone dedicated to engaging even the youngest visitors. Kids will love making arts and crafts, getting their faces painted, and participating in kid-friendly cultural workshops on the Family Fun Stage. Plus, the performers in this zone know what it takes to keep kids entertained, and there will be plenty of singing and dancing throughout the festival! The Kids Zone also features a special area for toddlers where they can move around freely and play with other little ones.
No festival is complete without a stellar line-up of performers, and the Surrey Fusion Festival’s headliners are no different! Sudan Archives, known for her unique blend of electronic, R&B and Sudanese-inspired sounds, headlines the festival on July 20th. On July 21st, Malkit Singh, a prominent Punjabi folk singer takes the stage to wow audiences. Keeping with the theme of diversity and cultural celebration, other artists include MAUVEY, DJ Goddess, Jade LeMac, Julio Avila Cuban Band, and more.
