Kick off Celebrate the Season with the Light Up and a festive open house at the Alberta Legislature and Visitor Centre this winter for free, family-friendly fun! This December, enjoy the sights and sounds of the holiday season with time-honoured traditions and a brilliant Christmas light display that has delighted Albertans for 40 years.

Get your family in the Christmas spirit and experience the holiday magic of the Edmonton downtown core. Enjoy the annual Light Up The Legislature ceremony and celebrate the season with free musical performances and festive cheer. Take free tours of the Alberta Legislature building, and discover what’s on at the Visitor Centre. There is always something fun to see and do at the Alberta Legislature, no matter what the season!

Light Up The Legislature

December 3, 2025
6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

The official Light Up The Legislature ceremony will take place on Wednesday, December 3, 2025. Come early to the Queen Elizabeth II Building and enjoy family-friendly activities, musical performances, and hot chocolate in the Visitor Centre. At 6:30 pm, join Speaker McIver as the switch is flipped on the grand Christmas tree and outdoor holiday display in Violet King Henry Plaza! Afterwards, guests are invited back to the Visitor Centre to warm up with more festive fun.

Celebrate the Season

December 5 to 20, 2025
Friday | 12:00 pm & 6:30 pm
Saturday | 6:30 pm

Celebrate the Season with merry musical performances from local choirs, orchestras, and musical ensembles! From December 5 to 20, you can visit the Alberta Legislature’s historic rotunda on Friday and Saturday to enjoy these free, festive events, perfect for a family outing or date night! Alberta Legislature Building Guided Tours

Wednesday to Friday | 3:00 pm
Saturday and Sunday | 11:00 am, 12:00 pm, 1:00 pm, and 2:00 pm

Alberta Legislature tours are offered year-round, but they are extra special with the building decked out in its holiday finest! Book online or in person to join a free 45-minute guided tour and discover the history, art, and architecture of the iconic domed building. It makes for a fun and informative experience for all ages!

Visitor Centre

Wednesday to Sunday | 11:00 am – 3:00 pm

The Legislative Assembly’s interactive Visitor Centre is located just North of the Legislature Building, on the main floor of the Queen Elizabeth II Building.  Admission is free, and no advance registration is required to stop in and discover the Borealis Gallery, Capital Gifts, the Democracy Discovery Centre, and Pehonan Theatre.

  • Discover Your Alberta Legislature: The Story of a Place in The Borealis Gallery from now until April 2026. This exhibit explores the founding of our province and government, and shows how the people of Alberta and their Legislature have grown and changed together over time.
  • Don’t miss the 11-minute film Our People, Our Province being shown on the 360-degree screen in the Pehonan Theatre. This unique 4D experience will take you on an immersive journey through Alberta’s social and political history!
