Sensational STEM! Explore Astronomy, Coding and More at DiscoverE!

DiscoverEWhether you have a junior stargazer enamored with astronomy, a computer whiz who loves cracking code, or a young scientists eager to experiment, DiscoverE has a program for you! DiscoverE is a student-delivered program at the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Engineering. The goal is to help children and youth recognize the importance of engineering, science and technology in today’s world – through a program that offers plenty of hands-on activities, fun and mentorship.

DiscoverE

DiscoverE programs are offered through the school year as Saturday Camps. Kids will spend 3 hours each Saturday over the course of 10 weeks learning, doing, trying and discovering. For campers that would like to participate in both morning and afternoon sessions, lunch time supervision will be provided. Not to worry if your child has participated in a DiscoverE camp or workshop in the past – the programming is always new and the projects are always changing to keep students interested, engaged and excited! Registration is now open for Fall 2019.

SATURDAY CAMPS – FALL 2019:

STEM Camps:

Grade 4 – 6 – Space and Astronomy
Participants will explore the wonders of Space and learn about how different aspects of science and engineering contribute to the fields of space exploration and astronomy.

Grade 7 – 9 – Innovative STEM-ineers
Each week, participants will learn about key players in the STEM field, engage in the theory behind scientific discoveries and attempt to re-create experiments that led to innovations in STEM fields.

Tech Camps:

Grade 4 – 6 – Coding Basics: Scratch
Participants will use block based coding in the program Scratch to design and create programs and games that utilize programming logic to accomplish a task.

Grade 7 – 9, Amazing Arduino
Participants will use arduinos to complete a variety of tasks. The physical side of computers will be taught using a programmable microcontroller, while the software side will be taught through C++ coding programs.

discoverE

The DiscoverE program was founded in Edmonton in 1993 amid a national concern over the shortage of students entering the fields of engineering, science and technology. Each year, the program delivers workshops, programs and summer camps to more than 27,000 students in Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories.
