We are born with an innate sense of curiosity and a drive for exploration. As children develop, their fertile brains are rapidly growing, discovering, and make new connections. The first five years of a child’s life are integral to this rapid emotional, social, cognitive, and physical development, and it’s important to use this unique opportunity. It’s wonderful to watch a child flourish and seeing the world through a child’s eyes can help release the wonder in us all.
Kepler Academy is one of Edmonton’s newest and most innovative facilities, designed to celebrate the whole child. Relying on rigorous research and numerous child development studies, Kepler Academy offers children an exploratory approach to education. This research-backed curriculum is combining diverse and exciting activities as they strive to develop the whole child, and they offer full-time daycare and after-school care services for Edmonton’s children. The first location will open in January 2018 in Westlink Park, with two more locations anticipated in April 2018 in the Downtown core and the University of Alberta area. Parents are invited to visit the Kepler Academy website to learn more and register their child.
The programs at Kepler Academy provide activities for a wide spectrum of learning. Technology will play a role, as robotics and coding are introduced, in addition to the arts, free play, outdoor activities, and the educational time that will be a part of the day. The children will also experience pre-reading, math, and science, as well as a circle time with music and stories. The extra-curricular programming will include sculpting, yoga, cooking, and Jiu-Jitsu. There will also be scheduled field trips and, of course, daily naptime for the younger children. Learning is easy when it’s so much fun!
The curriculum has been developed around important developmental milestones or “badges.” These badges reflect the stages of each particular age, such as walking, potty training, and pincer grip for the little ones and literacy, math, and science for the older children. The after-school children will also receive badges for such things as sculpting, Jiu-Jitsu, and yoga.
Kepler Academy understands the importance of food and nutrition for the whole development of a child and will be working with a nationally-renowned child nutritionist to develop a healthy meal plan. The Academy will provide a 4-week meal rotation plan using the onsite kitchen, with a nutritious lunch and two snacks a day. The meal plan and recipes will be available to parents on the website.
Communication with Parents
As a partner in your child’s day, Kepler Academy understands the importance of communicating and collaborating with you as a parent. Through the Kepler Academy mobile app, teachers can document a child’s day for you to receive electronically through email or text. They will track attendance, meals, bathroom, activities, and daily progress, as well as photos and videos for you to enjoy. Of course, this doesn’t replace the regular in-person interaction between parents, children, and staff that is the foundation of good engagement and relationships.
The Kepler Academy program is carefully styled around three philosophies of child development. The Montessori approach respects children as individuals as they are taught independence, self-confidence, and self-control over impulses and emotions. The Reggio method understands that children use many ways to show their understanding and express their thoughts and creativity. It encourages thinking and discovering through drawing, sculpting, movement, pretend play, and music, as well as asking questions and exploring for answers. The Waldorf approach emphasizes imagination in learning, integrating artistic, intellectual, and artistic development of the child.
Inspired by this, Kepler Academy has developed an ideal program for your child, at any age.
Stargazers (16 weeks to 18 months)
Stargazers are developing at a rapid pace in both mind and body. Full of wonderment from their surroundings, everything is an exciting new experience for them.
Explorers (19 Months to 3 – 4 Years)
Explorers are characterized by independence and growth. Constantly seeking the unknown through adventure, they are bursting with energy and new ideas.
Navigator ( 3 – 5 years, or pre-kindergarten)
Navigators are exploring their world with a keen sense of direction. They are purposeful and action-oriented, not stopping until they achieve their goals.
Pioneers are intrepid discoverers. By charting new territories through exploration, they are learning the skills they will need to become the next leaders.
The Stellar Program (Out of School Children):
Children aged six to twelve come during the out-of-school hours. The current program will introduce a number of STEAM-based activities. The philosophy for the Stellar Program is to allow children to partake in engaging extracurricular activities during these hours to free up evenings for quality time with the family. Robotics will be offered, in addition to yoga, Jiu-Jitsu, pottery, photography and cooking classes.
You can feel confident in your desire to help your children have the best childhood possible. The years go by so quickly and there is so much to discover! Continue your child’s journey of learning and exploration with Edmonton’s new and innovative facility.
