The Nutcracker by the Royal Winnipeg BalletThe Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s production of the Nutcracker is family-friendly perfect! Set in 1913, the Canadian-themed production features hockey players, Ottawa’s Peace Tower, RCMP, adorable polar bears, a fruit-cake stealing big brown bear, reindeer, and angels. The Ballet BC & Royal Winnipeg Ballet production was made for kids.

And for the ballet purists out there, don’t worry the dancing is exactly what we’ve come to expect from RWB. Grand jetes, fouettes, and dazzling lifts are on full display throughout the 2 hour performance.

Ballet BC NutcrackerBallet was integral to my formative years and I want to ensure my 2 young sons are exposed to the beautiful – and physically demanding – discipline. Every year we prepare for seeing a performance of the Nutcracker by listening to the music repeatedly. I love that my 6 & 8 year old sons wander around the house humming the overture. Attending the Ballet BC presentation of the Nutcracker is something my boys look forward to every year. Both of them, since the ages of 2 & 4, have sat on the edges of their seats throughout the performance. While making through Giselle or Romeo & Juliet may be a few years away, my kids love the Nutcracker and the RWB production is their favourite.

Attending a performance of the Nutcracker is a holiday tradition for many families. I have seen countless productions of The Nutcracker and, without a doubt, the RWB version is the most family-friendly. You still have time to see a performance as they are at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre until Sunday.
