Hands up if you love the over-the-top, romance-oozing, holiday magic dished out by Hallmark in their annual holiday movies. Now what if I told you that here, in Vancouver, you can catch a live performance with all the same over-used cliches and tropes? And not only that, this live performance will have tears of laughter streaming down your cheeks! Merry Kissmas – A Royal Romance is everything your heart needs this holiday season. And don’t worry all those Hallmark holiday movie boxes are fully checked in this Vancouver TheatreSports production: boy and girl meet, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl have a silly argument, someone comes between boy and girl, will they or won’t they make up, whew, all is well, boy and girl get married.

This holiday-movie-parody is centred around a certain ginger-haired prince and his non-royal wife. Vancouver TheatreSports entertains audiences with the tales of Prince Randolf and Meghan Sparkle, the royal parents, the (shudder) suburban in-laws, and a wedding planner named Chris Garland. But this is where Vancouver TheatreSports deviates from other stage productions. The actors start with a story-framework but what actually transpires on stage is up to the creative members in the audience. Vancouver TheatreSports improvisers use suggestions from audience members to create on-the-spot, never-to-be-repeated comedic versions of stereotypical romcom and royal wedding characters and situations. Flash backs will take the audience to key moments in the couple’s courtship and then action moves forward to the day of the wedding – Kissmas Day.

Vancouver TheatreSport’s Merry Kissmas – A Royal Romance is suitable for families with children ages 8 and up. In addition to evening performances every Wednesday through Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m., Vancouver TheatreSports has four matinee performances which is perfect for the younger crowd:

  • Sunday, December 15 at 11:30 a.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday, December 21 & 22 at 11:30 a.m.
  • Tuesday, December 24 at 2 p.m.
