Let your kid live on the water this summer! Is there anything more beautiful than the Vancouver beaches? There aren’t many kids who wouldn’t want to spend countless hours on the beach and in the water. Combine that with the chance to learn windsurfing, skimboarding, and SUP (stand-up paddleboarding) and you’ve just won the parent-of-the-year award. Windsure Adventure Watersports Summer Camps get kids excited about being on the water. They learn all the essential safety rules, they are loaded up with confidence, and shown the techniques to master windsurfing, skimboarding, and paddleboarding. The best part? They get home at the end of the day exhausted from all their time having fun in the great outdoors!
Windsure Adventure Watersports camps are customizable to your needs. Your child can partake in a morning camp (9am – 12pm), an afternoon camp (1pm – 4pm) or an all-day program (9am – 4pm). No matter the camp, all campers need to bring a bathing suit, towel, water and sunscreen. For windsurfing, a pair of shoes that can get wet (old sneakers, water shoes or surf booties) is optional but recommended.
Get a handle on the basics of windsurfing: theory, steering, tacking, wind force, weather prediction, knots & hitches, launching, storage, self-rescue techniques, and safety rules including the right-of-way rules. Campers will also try their hand at simulator trainers. Please note there is an age guideline (10 – 15 years), and kids need to weigh at least 80lbs (36kg). These guidelines are in place to ensure that participants have enough body mass to lift the windsurfing sail out of the water.
Advanced Windsurfing Camp
Once the basics of Level 1 are mastered, participants are ready to hone more advanced skills. The level 2 camp will teach: boom tacks, power gybes, beach starts, and there will be an emphasis placed on upwind sailing. Participants will also learn how to use a harness. This camp is offered only in the afternoons (1pm – 4pm) as that is when the wind conditions are better.
Skimboarding & Explore Camp
First-time and beginner skimboarders will learn the proper technique of “throwing” the board and skimming across the sand, and can even be introduced to basic maneuvers such as 180′s and shuvits. Intermediate riders will learn an assortment of flatland maneuvers and even experiment with ramps. This camp also offers an educational exploration component allowing students to learn about local wildlife like eagles and seals, tides and how they work, as well as participate in other games and activities. This is a half-day camp.
Skimboarding & SUP Camp
This camp teaches the techniques of both skimboarding and SUP (stand-up paddleboarding). It’s perfect for participants who want to try out both sports. The difference between this camp and the Skimboarding & Explore Camp, is that the time allocated to exploration in the other camp is dedicated to learning SUP. This program has both full-day and half-day camp options.
Advanced Skimboarding Camp
The Advanced Skimboarding Camp focuses on improving the basic tricks taught in the intro skimboarding camp. Students will ride new terrains such as rails, jumps, and practice wave skimming and other advanced flatwater techniques. This camp is recommended for ages 10+ and for those who possess solid intro skimboarding skills already. This is a half-day camp.
Skimboarding & Ultimate Frisbee Camp
Skimboarders will learn the proper technique of “throwing” the board and skimming across the sand, and will be introduced to basic maneuvers such as 180′s and shuvits. Meanwhile, the ultimate portion in partnership with Elevate Ultimate focuses on building confidence and teaching values such as sportspersonship, personal accountability, and open-mindedness. Games-based activities will focus on teaching athletes skills like throwing, catching, and cutting, all through small-sided games. Portions of the ultimate camp will be played on the grass and beach! This is a full-day camp.
Fun & SUP Camp
Windsure SUP camps are designed to teach kids the proper paddle techniques in a fun and safe, non-competitive environment. The program’s goal is to provide beginners with the skills, knowledge and equipment they need to become self-sufficient stand-up paddlers. This program is suitable for younger students who are still working to develop the strength and balance required for longer paddle adventures. Students will intermittently paddle and play beach and water games, allowing for active rest in between shorter paddles. This is a full-day camp for kids aged 7-10 years.
This SUP Camp is structured very similarly to the Fun & SUP Camp, though the participants in this half-day camp are aged 10-15 years. The program is suitable for paddlers who are confident in being on a board by themselves, seeking to challenge their skills with longer paddle adventures. Students should expect to be on the water for most of the camp duration, weather and conditions permitting.
For Summer 2022, Windsure Adventure Watersports are offering four options of multi-sport, full-days camps. The camps, which are included in the descriptions above, are: Skimboarding & SUP Camp (for kids aged 7-15 years), Windsurfing & SUP Camp (for kids aged 10-15 years and weighing 80lbs+), Windsurfing & Skimboarding / SUP Camp (for kids aged 10-15 years and weighing 80lbs+), and Skimboarding & Ultimate Frisbee Camp (for children aged 7-15 years).
The Multi-Sport Full-Day camps offer your child the chance to immerse themselves into one or more of the watersports taught by Windsure. The full-day camps run from 9am – 4pm. Lunch supervision is provided, but the campers need to pack their own lunch, snacks, water, and sunscreen.
