All aboard the Winter Tram in Steveston! This is one historic attraction you don’t want to miss!

Hop on board Tram Car No. 1220 for some holiday fun for the whole family. In addition to the festive decorations, there is plenty to see and do for everyone. Start by checking out the amazing displays by local LEGO artist Peter Grant. He has recreated detailed and accurate models of the heritage buildings around Steveston, including Tram Car 1220! Look closely to see all the tiny pieces that went into ensuring the models are as close to the real thing as possible. Anyone who has ever made their own LEGO model will appreciate the amount of time and attention to detail needed to put these recreations together! Next, wander around the Tram building to learn more about Tram Car 1220, the tram system in BC, and the different components of the tram itself.

Did you know that Tram Car 1220 was in operation from 1913-1958 between Marpole and Steveston Village? Tram Car 1220 was purchased from the St. Louis Car Company in Missouri, along with 27 others. Of those tram cars, there are only 5 that still survive today, and Tram Car 1220 in Steveston is one of them! This fascinating piece of Richmond’s transportation history underwent an extensive restoration in 2016 to restore the tram to its original condition. When you visit the Steveston Tram, you will learn all about how the tram operated from 1913-1958, in addition to the amazing efforts of the volunteers during the restoration process. History aficionados and transportation enthusiasts will love the interactive displays and exhibits showcasing this piece of Richmond’s history. Check out the new child-friendly interactive exhibit about Richmond’s interurban transportation system. It is a great place for children to learn about how people got around before there were so many vehicles on the road!

There are also plenty of family-friendly activities to check out at the Winter Tram. Cozy up in the reading corner to read some holiday stories, take a family photo at one of the holiday displays, or make a Polar Express-themed craft to take home! In addition to the exhibits, crafts, and festive decor, some special events are happening at the Winter Tram.

December 11th: From 1-3 pm, the Richmond Public Library will be on-site for a reading of the Polar Express on board the Tram. This is a drop-in activity with free admission.

December 10 &17th: After your visit to the Winter Tram, head to the Steveston Town Square, conveniently located right next to the Steveston Museum, for a Songs in the Snow event. From 4-6 pm, there will be live music from talented performers to get everyone in the holiday spirit.
