Calgary’s Jewish community invites the public to help celebrate the Annual Community Chanukah Menorah Lighting Ceremony at City Hall’s Atrium Monday, December 23, 2019, at 5:30 pm.

The lighting of the Menorah is the focal point of the celebration of Chanukah – an annual festival which commemorates a 2100-year-old historically significant battle for religious freedom. Jews worldwide light their menorahs (candelabras) as a gesture and public display of remembrance and commitment. Chabad Lubavitch, a global Jewish educational organization, organizes community lightings such as this one throughout the world, including at the White House, in front of Parliaments in Canada, Britain, Australia, and the Alberta Provincial Legislature.

Each year hundreds of Calgarians come to join community leaders and dignitaries as they celebrate with the lighting ceremony, dancing, and eating traditional potato pancakes called “latkes.” There will also be Chanukah treats for the children, so come and celebrate the miracle of lights!
