Somewhere between summer camps and summer jobs lies those middle-schoolers. Maybe they’re too old for some summer camps, and they might be old enough to stay home alone, but the summer vacation can feel long to them. More importantly, they are on the cusp of an explosion of brain development and are getting ready to tackle the world. Engenuics knows just what they need! They have developed Camp enGENIUS, a STEM-based summer camp designed specifically for junior high students, ages 11 – 15.

Engineering and programming are found in nearly every job field in today’s world. This summer camp is all about breaking down the misunderstandings and barriers to technical careers. Even if your child isn’t specifically considering a STEM career, these foundational skills can only be an advantage in both their schooling and their choices after graduation. No experience is required and problem-solving, group work, and presentations are all part of this fantastic week.

Whether your child is naturally drawn to STEM topics or they glaze over when they hear the terms math, science, or engineering, they will discover how accessible and how much fun they can have in this field. The camps feature small groups and extensive one-on-one time with the instructors, ensuring students get the best possible experience. The instructors are 3rd-year engineering students who have spent the year preparing their projects and activities for the camps.

These instructors have prepared a variety of interesting activities to help the students make significant connections with technology. Campers will use basic circuit components to build a mini-robot and will learn to solder their very own circuit board. They will program a battleship game and use a drone to film themselves from 100 ft in the sky. Along the way, they will be learning significant engineering concepts and having loads of fun! Their confidence in the critical STEM skills will naturally increase and they may even learn things about themselves they never thought possible. The students will take home several projects and even the movie filmed by a drone about their camp experience.

 

Important Details

Camp enGENIUS is one week long and the same camp is repeated throughout the summer. Centrally located in the middle of NW Calgary at the Dalhousie Community Centre, the camp runs from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm and also offers before and after care (7:30 – 8:30 am and 4:30 – 5:30 pm).

This summer, those in-between junior high students have the perfect place to go. It doesn’t get much better than learning, growing, and discovering while you’re having a great time at summer camp!
