Halloween is known for costumes, treats, and all things spooky, so you might not think about the importance of reading while you’re trying to plan a fun holiday for the kids. But really, it’s the perfect time of year to embrace the wonder of books and storytelling! Favourite story characters make brilliant costume choices for the big night and the cooler weather makes cuddling up with a treat and a story feel just right. This Halloween season, you can make it a spooky story when the ‘Spooky Reading Tree’ takes root at Southcentre Mall in partnership with Little Red Reading House.
Southcentre Mall and Little Red Reading House are excited to join forces for a Halloween campaign to encourage Calgary families to celebrate and embrace the importance of reading. From October 11 to 31, 2022, kids of all ages will enjoy an immersive storybook-themed installation, with a larger-than-life ‘Spooky Reading Tree’ in Southcentre’s Centre Court. Here you’ll find a variety of vignettes inspired by popular fairytales, including Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, and Beetlejuice.
Families are invited to come and explore the spooky reading tree and use the backdrops for self-directed family photo ops. Community storytimes will also take place, during which families can enjoy dramatic readings of beloved childhood stories. The Spooky Reading Tree at Southcentre Mall will also feature a special donation shelf where families can donate or take home books throughout the duration of the campaign.
The display will also create opportunities for Calgarians to learn more about Little Red Reading House, a special reading place for children. Calgary Reads first opened Little Red Reading House in an Inglewood heritage home in 2015, and it was referred to as ‘the world’s largest Little Free Library’. With hundreds of books and dozens of tiny reading nooks and surprises inspired by fairytales, children and families can discover the magic of reading together. When each family’s hour-long visit ends, each child gets to choose a free book to take home and keep.
“The Spooky Reading Tree captures so much of what we try to do at Little Red Reading House—bring children the joy and delight of reading,” says Carolyn Wendt, director of Little Red Reading House. “We’re thankful to Southcentre Mall for this opportunity to inspire a love of reading and draw awareness about Little Red Reading House and the many benefits of reading together as a family.”
Bring the whole family to Southcentre Mall this Halloween season, and join Little Red Reading House’s mission to inspire a love of reading, provide book access, and give children a bright start in school and in life. Dress up as your favourite character and embrace the best stories of the season!
