Jazz Fest

The TD Halifax Jazz Festival is one of the most anticipated festivals of the summer! The festival is the oldest Jazz Festival and the largest summer festival in Atlantic Canada. There are so many fantastic acts and workshops happening throughout the city, highlighted by 6 days of amazing music at the Waterfront Stage (Lower Water and Salter Street). The Jazz Fest boasts tons of FREE daytime shows and workshops including the Splash! Bang! Boom! Kids Workshop.

We had a chance to enjoy this workshop at Jazz Fest 2018 aboard the Tall Ship Silva with Inti Gonzales and it was AMAZING! I think it’s fair to say that this is one of the best workshops offered in the city and thanks to the Halifax Jazz Fest and its sponsors, it is offered to kids of all ages (and their caregivers) FREE of charge!

As we sailed the Halifax Harbour, Inti Gonzalez led the group of inquisitive youngsters through a groove session with percussion instruments. He taught the group about different percussion instruments including the djambe, the cajón and hand percussion instruments. Inti had everyone movin’ and groovin’ to the rhythms of the heart, jungle animals and the ocean waves. It was a truly memorable experience for the young music makers and music lovers! This hands-on workshop gave the kids a chance to make music, courtesy of Fantasie Musical Instruments who provided instruments for everyone to try.

This year you can set sail aboard Theodore Tugboat with the Halifax Jazz Festival’s Splash! Bang! Boom! on Thursday, Friday and Saturday during Jazz Fest. On Thursday hop aboard with the entertaining Ross Burns, join dynamic local musician, Matt Gallant on Friday and on Saturday, make music with the talented Siobhan Martin. Arrive early as space is limited and boarding is on a first come, first served basis.

In addition to Splash! Bang! Boom!, visit the Kids Zone at the Waterfront Stage every day from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm for crafts, musical instrument making and more!  And of course, there are plenty of sweet sounds to enjoy with the kids at the daytime concerts. Dance the afternoon away at the Waterfront stage, Hydrostone Park and the Dartmouth Peace Pavillion! For a complete schedule, visit the TD Halifax Jazz Festival website. Get jazzy, Halifax!
