Cool off with a dip in a lake or splash in the waves along the ocean! One of the perks of living in HRM is that no matter where you are, you’re not far from a beach. We’ve put together a list of popular supervised Halifax beaches for you to explore this summer.
Update August 14th, 2026: Swimming is not advised at Rainbow Haven Beach or Lawrencetown Beach until further notice due to elevated levels of bacteria in the water.
 Clam Harbour Beach Provincial Park
Home to the annual Clam Harbour Beach Sandcastle Competition, this long, wide sandy beach is about an hour’s drive from Downtown Halifax. Visitors can enjoy a picnic in a field on the bluff, or take a dip in the water while the beach is supervised on weekends during the summer.
Crystal Crescent Beach Provincial Park
Just over 35 minutes south of Downtown Halifax is Crystal Crescent Beach, with clear blue water and beautiful white sandy beaches (three, to be exact). It also features long boardwalks and a great hiking trail.
Chocolate Lake Beach
The most urban beach, Chocolate Lake, is even located on a bus route and is a great spot for families who want a quick summer day getaway. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months from 11 AM – 5 PM.
Martinique Beach Provincial Park
With a protected wildlife refuge and wooded picnic areas behind the dunes, this 5km stretch of white-sandy beach has so much to offer explorers, beachcombers, and swimmers alike. With clear water and great waves, it is also a popular beach for surfers and paddleboarders.

This may be the most popular Halifax beach since it is tucked away in a cove and experiences less wind, as a result. On a hot summer weekend, make sure to get there early!
Remember to be safe out there! Wear your sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and flotation devices if participating in water activities. Also, check before you go for any changes to supervision hours or swim advisories. Happy swimming!
