We were so excited to be at the opening night of A Winter’s Tale Light Show at the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan Festival Site. We wanted to share our experience but also let you know that it’s open all winter long! If you want to stop by and see a free light show, it will be there until Spring of 2024. This is an annual event and a wonderful way to appreciate the beauty of winter. The light show continues through the season but the bonfire and children’s activities were a way to celebrate the opening day. (However, you can bring your own hot chocolate in a travel mug to stay warm!)

Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan Festival Site

Every year, they transform the stairs with beautiful lights at the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan Festival Site. We arrived before it was dark so we got to take in the activity while they waited to start the show. The light show is co-designed by lighting designer, Katie Blackburn-Dust and the children from the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation. The first design of A Winter’s Tale is called “Snowball Fights and Christmas Crackers on Christmas Morning.” They had music because it was opening night but you are welcome to listen to the playlist on their website on your phone while watching the light show.

Bonfire for Roasting Hot Dogs

While waiting for the show to begin, we had hot chocolate and roasted our hot dogs for supper. It was a unique and fantastic way to enjoy the mellow weather and look forward to the upcoming show.

Children’s Section

They had a little children’s area with help from Nutrien Wonderhub for building, creating, and imagining before the light show. It was a wonderful way to keep the kids happy and busy while they waited.

Dancing, light show, and smiles.

When the lights came on with the music the kids danced and got onto the stairs to enjoy the show from close up. It was beautiful to watch. Families and children all had a blast watching the lights change with the music. If you walk around the site, they have lights by the trees and in other spots. There are splashes of colour to cheer up your day.
