Art is powerful. And an art education in the lives of our children and young people provides foundational skills they need for a meaningful, purposeful life. Arts Umbrella, a distinguished arts education facility in Vancouver, offers programs to children and youth from ages 2 – 22. Kids will develop confidence, discipline, and creative expression through art, dance, and theatre. Plus, they are inspired to live a life of joy as they discover passions and unique skills!

Arts Umbrella opened its doors to 45 children in 1979. They have continued to grow in programming and numbers as they believe an arts education makes a difference in the lives of young people. This winter, the team of arts educators and staff are excited to lead Early Learning programs and programs in Art & Design, Dance, and Theatre, Music & Film.

Early Learning

Plant the seeds of creativity and inspire your young learner! These classes are for kids ages 2 – 6 years. The early years are significant in a child’s development: it’s a time to investigate problem-solving, nurture curiosity, and develop self-confidence. The Arts Umbrella programs are designed to encourage discovery in a fun, supportive, and inspiring environment and you’ll find both Parent and Me classes, as well as independent classes for the little ones. Dance

Young dancers at Arts Umbrella will achieve their full potential through the Lindsay Mearns School of Dance, as they offer a holistic, integrative approach. Dance graduates go on to perform with some of the world’s most prestigious companies, with their exceptional, foundational training in classical ballet, jazz, modern, and contemporary dance. Senior dancers are provided opportunities to perform world-class choreography and receive instruction from international guest artists. All dancers benefit from a supportive curriculum that balances physical development with emotional and intellectual growth, for a life-changing dance education. Theatre, Music & Film

The Robert M. Ledingham School of Theatre, Music & Film programs at Arts Umbrella have young performers getting hands-on with costumes, improv, script work, character studies, and theatrical performances. Experienced instructors guide students through collaborative and solo theatre exercises that teach timing, memorization, melody, harmony, and bodily self-awareness.  Students can also learn the technical aspects of theatre through the Stagecraft program, learning lighting, sound, costumes, and makeup design. Art & Design

In the Audain School of Art & Design at Arts Umbrella, young artists learn that art may take many forms, through sculpture, animation, painting, model-making, photography, environmental design, and more. The artist-instructors bring professional-level instruction to the studio and students work with high-quality materials in every class. For those who discover art as their passion, Arts Umbrella also offers advanced classes, scholarship programs, and portfolio-building and exhibiting opportunities.
