Calling all explorers, history buffs, and adventure seekers: Britannia Mine is the place to be this summer!
If you haven’t been to the Britannia Mine Museum, put it on your Summer Fun Bucket List. This family-friendly attraction offers plenty of hands-on and immersive activities detailing the history and legacy of Britannia Mine. Prepare to be transported back in time at Britannia Mine Museum as you explore one of Canada’s most important mining sites. Britannia Mine Museum updates its programs, exhibits and experiences frequently, and this summer you can explore the 50th Anniversary exhibit A Museum’s Journey, plus two NEW programs and a special returning program!
Don’t miss the exciting summer exhibit A Museum’s Journey, which details how the site has transformed from a working mine that closed in 1974 to the incredible museum it is today. From the early days of getting the site designated as a heritage location, to growing the museum and becoming one of Metro Vancouver’s most popular attractions, A Museum’s Journey celebrates the origin story of Britannia Mine Museum and looks toward where they are heading in the next 50 years.
First up, the child-friendly Chemistry Cleanup offers educational programming in the Terralab STEAM learning space. Here, families will learn about environmental remediation through hands-on activities as they explore the chemistry involved in sustainability. A family-favourite program from Spring Break called Whatever Happened to Mt. Sheer? is back for a special summer run. Visitors will learn about what life was like for the families that lived, worked, went to school, and attended church living here when the mine was in its heyday. This interpreter-led program is offered daily at 11 AM and 3 PM and is included with admission. Don’t miss the exciting and all-new Britannia Before Rail and Road program. It’s hard to believe, but there was a time when the only way to access Britannia Beach was through steamboats. Through a combination of rare footage, storytelling, and narration, visitors will learn how Britannia Beach was shaped by the tides and became a thriving hub of family and community.
Every trip to Britannia Mine Museum is filled with excitement as visitors experience Mill No. 3. Don your hard hat for a journey into the side of a mountain and back in time to learn about mining in British Columbia. Just like miners, visitors will hop on the mine train and head underground to learn about what working in a mine was like. Don’t miss the award-winning BOOM! attraction, featuring light, sound, and special effects inside the historic mine. Experience a multi-sensory live-action attraction with over 30 speakers, multiple screens, and special effects that bring Mill No. 3 roaring back to life!
