Have you experienced the theatrical magic created by Carousel Theatre for Young People? Every year this accomplished production company mounts a series of performances just for kids. These shows are not theatre performances that are kid-friendly; these are theatre shows for kids. But don’t let that fool you into thinking there is anything kid-like about the quality of the actors, the script, the sets, or the staging. The performances by Carousel Theatre for Young People rival the quality of any theatre production you will find in Vancouver.
Situated on Granville Island, Carousel Theatre for Young People has been producing educational and entertaining theatre for children and youth since 1976, and they are the only company in BC that presents a season of professional plays for young audiences. Additionally, CTYP presents a season full of local, national, and international plays for ages 3-17, commissions new works and mentors emerging artists.
Ignite your child’s love of theatre this May by attending the West Coast premiere of Alphonse, a Theaturtle production. Audiences will be delighted to join Alphonse, a young boy who goes missing as he meanders along a country road. As his parents, friends, teachers, and even the police look for him, Alphonse is lost within his imagination and his elaborate stories. Adults and children alike will love this heart-warming tale told by a single actor who plays 17 roles! Alphonse reminds us all that imagination is integral to our lives, and that growing up doesn’t mean we have to leave our imagination behind. Adding an extra touch of magic is the setting of this play; audiences will join Alphonse outdoors in the Picnic Pavilion to become fully immersed in the story. The Picnic Pavillion is covered, but with open walls, it is recommended that audience members dress for the elements. This play is best suited for ages 5-12 and has a run-time of 75 minutes.
