All aboard for a summer of fun! Choo Choo your way to the Railway Museum of BC for a fully interactive experience that will delight train aficionados of all ages.
Situated just off the picturesque Sea-to-Sky highway, the Railway Museum of BC is an ideal stop for families traveling between Vancouver and Whistler, and for those looking for a local getaway to Squamish this summer. If you’ve been to RMBC for one of their many family holiday events (like the North Pole Express or A Day Out with Thomas), you know that the expansive location has tons of hands-on activities to fill a full day of fun.
Soak up the sun outdoors with a ride on the Mini Rail that takes visitors around the work yard to see the many trains. You’ll feel the wind in your hair, and kids will squeal with delight as the train motors along down the tracks. Depending on the day, you might even get the opportunity to ride a BIG train like the BC Rail Budd Diesel Car, or the BC-21. Inside the Car Shop next to the Colonist Car, see the newest exhibit – a large model railway layout that will amaze the children. It features a complete layout with mountain scenes patterned after the White Pass & Yukon RR. Continue your adventure outside as you check out the historic operational locomotives on the grounds of the Railway Museum of BC, and be sure to get your photo taken standing next to each one.
After you’ve had your fill outside, get ready for more fun and interactive activities inside! You can’t miss the incredible Royal Hudson 2860 Steam Locomotive at its grand location inside the museum. Climb inside the cab and ring the bell to experience what train conductors would have felt when this grand locomotive was in service. Continue on to check out the British Columbia Business Car and imagine yourself traveling by train as you move amongst the rows to choose your seat.
No visit is complete without visiting the Post Office to see how mail was delivered by train in the Baggage Car, and see the Colonist Sleep Car to imagine what it would be like to sleep on a train during a long journey. Check out the print shop to see a vintage printing press in operation, and don’t miss the Brightbill House, General Store and Fire Trucks in the PGE Firehall to see what life was like when people traveled primarily by train.
Cap off your day by spending hours playing with interactive train sets and having your lunch outdoors in the idyllic setting surrounded by nature and the mountains. There’s so much to see and do at the Railway Museum of BC that you can return time and again throughout the summer to catch what you missed. Make it a whole family outing and bring the grandparents on Fridays for half-price senior admissions, or spend your Saturday and Sunday exploring the vast museum. Tickets are available at the door, or ensure a summer of fun by purchasing a membership, which is valid for 15 months, so you can visit as often as you like!
