Don your hardhat for a journey into the side of a mountain and head back in time to learn about mining in British Columbia. The museum is incredibly well put together, with something for all ages. This immersive historical experience begins the moment you see the giant haul truck, standing 20 ft tall and weighing over 800,000 lbs! Snap a quick photo and imagine driving such an enormous machine. Then, head inside the museum to start exploring the Underground train or the Gold Panning Pavilion.
The best part about the Britannia Mine Museum is that there are so many interactive permanent exhibits, plus special features that occur throughout the year. The whole family can return again and again to experience something new!
Britannia Mine Museum Spring Break
Over Spring Break, Britannia Mine Museum is even more fun to visit, with special events and activities. Become a detective and experience the brand new Live in Lab: Secret Identities. Visitors will become mini mineral detectives as they investigate what minerals live below the surface. During these hands-on, drop-in sessions, participants will learn how to use tests that examine hardness, streak, and safe acid reactions to uncover mineral properties hidden from first glance. Don’t miss a special demonstration to uncover glowing fluorescence using blacklight! It’s science, curiosity, and a little bit of wonder – all wrapped into one engaging lab adventure.
You can also step back in time while visiting Britannia Mine Museum and discover Whatever Happened to Mt. Sheer? This interpreter-led program is offered daily at 1:30 pm. Explore what life was like on Mt. Sheer in 1940 for the families that lived there. Visitors will learn about the remarkable mountain community and what remains of it today. How did people living in this community get around? Learn about transportation to and from Britannia Beach in Rails and Roads daily at 3:30 pm. See rare footage with vivid narration and hear personal stories from former residents and those who worked at the Britannia Beach Pier.
