The lights, the stage, and the collective emotional experience. There is nothing that compares to live theatre, and the Arts Club is a leader in producing exceptional shows right here in Vancouver. Everyone remembers their first live theatre show. I was 9 when I first went to the Arts Club to see a show, and although I didn’t know the story ahead of time, I was transfixed by the music, the set, the dazzling costumes, and of course, the unbelievable acting. From that moment on, I was hooked on theatre, and it sparked a new passion inside of me.  Going to the theatre as a family is an experience that can become a full-day event. Whether you like to dress up and go for a meal ahead of time, or opt for a more casual approach and get snacks at the theatre, it is an experience that the whole family won’t soon forget.

The Arts Club produces professional theatre on three separate stages: The Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage (on Granville St.), Granville Island Stage (on Granville Island), and the Newmont Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre (on West. 1st Ave). The best part about all of these venues is that every seat offers a great view. The audience is able to see and hear everything regardless of where they are sitting because of the size and orientation of the theatres. This is great for families because you can rest assured you won’t be so high up that the actors are mere ants on a stage! Whether you have a theatre aficionado on your list, or you are hoping to instil a love of performing arts in your children, tickets make a great gift for everyone on your list.

Here are our show picks for everyone in your life!

The Sound of Music (now until December 24th):  This beloved musical makes a great early Christmas present for the whole family! Set in Austria at the beginning of World War II,  Maria, a governess hired for the Von Trapp family, falls in love and transforms the lives of the children and then Captain Von Trapp.

Forgiveness (Jan 12- Feb 12, 2023): Based on the acclaimed memoir by Mark Sakamoto, Forgiveness is the powerful story of his family’s experiences during World War II.  In the face of adversity, they chose not to live a life of anger but to embrace forgiveness—a gift of love they passed down to their families.

Teenage Dick (Feb. 9- March 5, 2023): This play is great for the teenagers in your life! A “witty and darkly funny Shakespeare adaptation,” this play follows Richard Gloucester as he navigates the pitfalls and challenges of being a teenager at Roseland High School.

Sense and Sensibility (March 2-April 2, 2023): Based on the novel by Jane Austen, Elinor and Mariane find themselves at the center of gossip after they suddenly lose their family fortune. Whispers around them become daily occurrences in this witty adaptation.

Rubaboo (March 30-April 30, 2023): Guided by Metis artist Andrea Menard, Rubaboo takes audiences on a musical journey to explore topics such as reconciliation, love, and resilience through voice, guitar and drums. It is masterful storytelling that will demonstrate the beauty of Metis culture.

Beautiful: The Carole King Musical (June 8- Aug. 6, 2023): Experience the enduring music of pop-legend Carole King from where she got her start as a teenage songwriter to her incredible solo career.

Million Dollar Quartet (June 22- Aug. 6, 2023): Inspired by a true story, follow four legends: Presley, Cash, Lewis and Perkins into a recording session at Sun Records in Memphis for an incredible evening of the greatest hits!
