Tennis is one of those classic summer sports. Sunny days, the satisfying thwack of the ball over the net, and a great excuse to be active. So as the fall approaches, and some families are checking out the hockey and skiing gear, you might not be thinking of tennis. But the Alberta Tennis Centre, with its world-class indoor tennis facility, offers training and development programs for kids ages 4 and up! Whether they want to try tennis for the first time or take their skills to exciting new levels, it’s possible.

Alberta Tennis Centre boasts eight indoor tennis courts and they are in the process of converting their five outdoor courts to indoor courts by fall 2022, making them the place to play all winter! They offer state-of-the-art technology, a fitness centre, hospitality services, and onsite parking; they have redefined the standard for major tennis facilities in Canada. This fall, take advantage of this with their Junior Program.

The Junior Program Pathway at the Alberta Tennis Centre offers programming for children of all levels and abilities. It doesn’t matter if your teenager has never picked up a racquet or your 4-year-old is eager to get started. These programs offer kids the best tennis development possible and are fully aligned to Long Term Athlete Development. All junior programs have a small player-to-coach ratio, so there will be ample opportunity for attention and growth with tennis professionals certified by Tennis Canada. The physical literacy skills developed will bring enjoyment and benefits for your child’s whole life.

Junior Program Pathway

The Junior Pathway FUNdamentals programs are recreation programs designed to introduce basic skills, play the game, and enjoy the sport for a lifetime. They are focused on encouraging children of any age to love tennis. Multiple classes are offered throughout the week, but players only need to commit to a minimum of one.

Tiny Tots Tennis ‘Try-It’: This 1-hour class is designed for children aged 4 – 5 who have never played tennis before. They will learn coordination and physical literacy skills that will help them learn the fundamental tennis movements.

RedBall ‘Try-It’: This 1-hour class is designed for children aged 6 – 8 who have never played tennis before. The program is focused on developing tennis skills to Serve, Rally & Score and athletic skills.

OrangeBall ‘Try-It’: This 1-hour class is designed for children aged 9 – 10 that have little to no experience playing tennis. Realistic game situations will be used to facilitate the development of tactical fundamentals.

GreenBall ‘Try-It’: This 1-hour class is designed for children aged 11 – 12 that have little to no tennis experience. GreenBall continues the skill development of all areas of tennis: technical, tactical, physical, and psychological.

YellowBall ‘Try-It’: This 1-hour class is designed for children aged 13+ that have little to no tennis experience. Yellowball utilizes a full-size tennis court and players will generally be able to serve, rally and score points.

If your child has already gotten started in tennis, or they have completed a ‘Try-It’ session and are now hooked on tennis, you’ll want to look into ‘Play-It’ sessions for each level. This second level for each age group is for those committed to a minimum of two classes per week and is focused on developing a player’s tennis and athletic skills.

The Alberta Tennis Centre also runs Junior Competitive and Performance Programs by application. These programs are for athletes dedicated to competing and earning a university or college scholarship.

Does your child just want to connect the racquet with the ball? Or are they looking to polish their game and take it to a new level? Whether your son or daughter wants to play recreationally or become a high-calibre athlete, the Alberta Tennis Centre has a program that will keep your kids active and having fun.
