This year, 2017, marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, not only a significant battle during World War I, but a decisive moment in Canadian history. For the first time in the war, four Canadian divisions were attacked side by side, representing every region of our country. Brigadier-General A.E. Ross declared after the war, “in those few minutes I witnessed the birth of a nation.”
The victory was accomplished, and the ridge was won, but at a terrible cost. Nearly 3600 men were killed, and another 7000 were wounded. The Battle of Vimy Ridge became a symbol of sacrifice for the young country of Canada, as we moved out from under the shadow of the British Empire. It was also here that Canadian troops earned the reputation of the formidable courage and determination that was essential to their success.
In 1922, the French government ceded Vimy Ridge to Canada, and the land surrounding it. In 1936, the white marble of the Vimy Memorial was unveiled, standing as a reminder to all of us of the terrible sacrifice made by our fellow Canadians. Now, the Royal Canadian Mint is commemorating the solidarity, bravery, and sacrifice of the Canadian soldiers who fought there, with the release of a special Vimy Ridge $2 circulation coin.
“The Battle of Vimy Ridge was a milestone moment in Canadian War History that exemplifies the power of people to unite and to sacrifice for the greater good. The Royal Canadian Mint is proud to commemorate the 100th anniversary of this milestone with a brand new Battle of Vimy Ridge coin collection.”
On October 5th, 2017, the Royal Canadian Mint is officially unveiling its commemorative Vimy Ridge $2 circulation coin design that commemorates the 100th anniversary of the battle of Vimy Ridge at The Military Museums.
