Can you hear the whistle blowing?! There’s something about the clackety-clack of a train that brings out the kid in all of us. Trains have captured our imagination for generations and it’s time to climb aboard for SUPERTRAIN! The Calgary Model Railway Society is getting ready for Canada’s biggest and best annual Model Train Show on April 18 – 19, 2020.
SUPERTRAIN is back at the Genesis Centre, featuring over 65,000 sq. ft. of operating model railroad layouts, Lionel, Lego and Thomas trains, model building demonstrations, historical associations, railroad art and photos, hobby shops, manufacturers, and much more. There’s even a children’s play area. Over 120 exhibitors will impress you with new exhibits, spectacular displays, and a fun, affordable day out for the whole family!
Organized model railroading in Calgary goes back to 1934, when the first club, Calgary Model Trainmen, was started. In 1994, several model train clubs worked together to put on one major Model Train Show for the public. Years later, after several outgrown venues, you can see how this train show has grown and evolved into the amazing two days it is!
Even if you’re not passionate about model trains, you’ll find something here to appreciate. Take a free ride on the 1/8 scale trains from Iron Horse Park, plus, Canadian Pacific’s popular mini-train will be on site. Or you could check out the face painters, the henna tattoo artists, and a children’s storybook reader. There will also be the Children’s Play Area with large Thomas and Lego tables – all free and waiting to be enjoyed! At the South Bank Short Lines tables, kids can build a model of a train station to take home for free, or you can check out presentations and live demonstrations on how to get started in model railroading yourself. Members of the club love to share how they got started!
Hungry? With at least 8 food trucks onsite, you can make a day of it and enjoy a variety of treats and food options to help keep up your energy!
Even the parking is taken care of, making your weekend as relaxing as possible! SUPERTRAIN has arranged for hundreds of free parking spaces at the McKnight-Westwinds CTrain Station, with free stroller-accessible shuttle buses to the door of the show. There is also free parking at the Genesis Centre. Or forget your car and just take the CTrain to SUPERTRAIN. It’s a short walk from the Saddletowne station or you can take the shuttle from McKnight-Westwinds.
Adult admission is $15 and children aged 15 years and younger get in for FREE! You can buy advance tickets online at www.supertrain.ca or bring a non-perishable food donation for the Calgary Food Bank and receive a dollar off admission.
