Journey first into our beautiful Rocky Mountains and then into a world of art and imagination at Banff Centre Children’s Festival on Saturday, May 20th. With free or low-cost activities and live shows, Banff Centre Children’s Festival is a continent of imagination where children of all ages (and their favourite adults!) can explore some of Canada’s diverse cultures through dance, music, and more.
This year’s Banff Centre Children’s Festival features three headlining acts, each with tickets for just $7 per person and general seating at each performance.
De Temps Antan – 9:30 am & 12 pm
Banff Centre Children’s Festival kicks off with time-honoured melodies from the stomping grounds of Quebec’s musical past. Using fiddle, accordion, harmonica, guitar, bouzouki, and a number of other instruments, De Temps Antan blend boundless energy with the unmistakable joie de vivre found only in traditional Quebec music. Songs with a hint of contemporary – dosed with uncontrolled laughter, deep-rooted couplets and sudden, impromptu shifts – that speak to familiar rhythms of the past. The only thing missing is you!
Dancers of the Damelahamid: In Abundance – 11:30 am & 2:30 pm
Through dramatic dance, captivating narrative, intricately carved masks, and elaborate regalia, the Dancers of Damelahamid invite family audiences to follow the salmon cycle. This new dance work conveys important cultural teachings on balance, community, and sustainability, teaching us that that when we take only what we need there is plenty for all, including the salmon needed to spawn for the next year’s cycle.
Sheldon Casavant: Exploring the Impossible – 10 am & 1 pm
Sheldon Casavant shares his own story of discovering magic in an awe-inspiring performance filled with sleight of hand and mind-captivating illusions. Sheldon rolls fast-paced magic, audience participation, and a brief history of the most famous magician of all time – Harry Houdini – into one exciting and theatrical magic show. Light hearted, highly interactive, and appropriate for all ages.
Free activities at Banff Centre Children’s Festival include storytelling, creativity rooms, circus school, a family dance and lots more. You can make a whole day of it and what better excuse for a day or weekend trip to beautiful Banff??
Banff Centre Children’s Festival is proud to have Edmonton Community Foundation and TELUS as Festival Supporters.
