Calaway Park is celebrating 40+1 years of family fun in 2022! This popular Calgary summer destination has been providing joy, excitement and family memories in Alberta for over four decades. I used to love going as a kid, and now that I am grown I love taking my own kids for a day of amusement park fun. Calaway Park has really grown and changed over the years, and there is always something new and exciting to experience each time we visit and the kids have reached another ride height level!
While the 32 different rides are the biggest attraction at Calaway Park, they are by no means the only thing to look forward to. My daughter is not a fan of the big thrill rides as she has gotten older and taller, so it is nice we can mix the day up with carnival games, live shows, the Cinemagic 3D theatre and a walk through the Haunted Hotel. The live shows change frequently throughout the Spring and Summer so be sure to check the full schedule of circus acts, magic shows, dancers and other captivating performers. To celebrate this years 40+1 anniversary, Calaway Live – Calaway Park’s own youth performers – will also be returning to the Celebration Square Stage with two new live stage shows including one called Young Forever.
The focus in the park this year is all about family fun and creating memories. As you make your way through the park, be sure to keep an eye out for Family Fun Fact signs and timeline walls that will help you take a trip down memory lane. My memory is foggy so I am excited to visit and see pictures of how Calaway Park has changed over the years.
The one ride that sticks out in my memories as a child has to be the Timber Falls log ride! I can remember going on it repeatedly as a kid and my own family enjoys it just as much today. On hot days nothing feels better then being splashed by cool water as you plummet down that chute! And for the younger kids, Calaway Park offers a CP Spray n’ Play splash park area to take splash around in and cool off when you are needing a break from the rides.
Another of our favourite ways to cool down and take a break on a hot day is with an ice cream or cold treat! Heck we have been known to even enjoy them on a cool, rainy day. Lucky for us there are lots of great options between the 20 different food locations in the park. Everyone’s tastes will be satisfied with the choice of soft serve ice cream, hard ice cream, Mini Melts, snow cones and slush drinks! Plus enjoy all your other fair favourite foods like pizza, burgers, corn dogs, churros, mini donuts, popcorn, cotton candy, Beaver Tails and more.
Growing up in Red Deer, Calaway Park was a quick and easy daytrip. From Edmonton it is definitely still doable in a day, but our family prefers to make a full weekend of it when we are travelling all those miles. The Calaway RV Park and Campground, or a stay at the partner hotel are both great options for planning an overnight visit to Calgary. The Calaway RV Park and Campground offers 104 sites and a view of the mountains, and is just a short walk from the park gates. They even have care for your furry family members covered with an on-site Kennel to check into while you enjoy your day in the park!
