A new year, a fresh start, and a whole lot of great stuff to get your family out, moving and active! Welcome 2019 – I think we’re going to have a lot of fun together! We’ve picked a mere sampling of the family fun events in Edmonton this month – if you need more ideas, head over to the Family Fun Edmonton calendar!

Ice Castles (Open January 4) – Christmas is over, so cue Edmonton’s favourite royal rendezvous! The Ice Castles are back in Hawrelak Park on January 4! Check the schedule to time your visit for when the Ice Princesses or fire performers are on site!

Winter Freeze Fest (December 30 to January 4) – Strathcona County is embracing winter by holding their Freeze Fest in the days leading up to a very big weekend, when the County will host Rogers Hometown Hockey!

Free Drop-In Learn to Skate (Starts January 7) – The City of Edmonton’s Free Drop-In Learn to Skate program kicks off this months at a number of community league rinks around the city! Check the schedule for your closest rinks and times!

Family Studio at the AGA (Starts January 5) – The Art Gallery of Alberta is launching a creative new program for families with kids aged 3-5. Family Studio will run every Saturday morning! Older kids can enjoy Kids’ Drop-In Studio Saturday afternoons, and the popular Tours for Tots program still runs Wednesday Mornings.

Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Festival (January 12-13) – Celebrate winter at this fun, free, family-friendly festival! Enjoy street hockey, ice sculptures, snowshoeing, and of course, the popular Deep Freezer Races!

Lunar New Year – Ring in the Year of the Pig with events around Edmonton! West Edmonton Mall’s Lunar New Year Extravaganza runs January 12 & 13, while Bonnie Doon Centre hosts their event on January 26. More events are sure to be added, so keep an eye on our Lunar New Year category page.

Engineering Day (January 12) – Find out just how much fun science can be as you engineer solutions to some fairy tale character problems at the TELUS World of Science Edmonton! Can’t make it to Engineering Day? Maybe you want to witness the Total Lunar Eclipse on January 20!

Celebrate Robert Burns (January 20) – Bagpipes, dancing and of course, haggis will all be part of the party to celebrate Scottish Poet Robert Burns at the Rutherford House Provincial Historic Site.

World Snow Day (January 20) – Welcome the white stuff with a day of fun at Snow Valley – or head east to the World Snow Day party in Strathcona County!

South West Ski Fest (January 26) – Want to try cross country skiing or snowshoeing? South West Ski Fest is the perfect chance to do it for free! More the après-ski type? They’re holding a chili cookoff too!

Family Literacy Day (January 27) – Curl up with a stack of good books, or head to the Family Literacy Carnival for more reading fun!

Salsa N Skate (January 27) – Heat up winter with some spicy latin music and a day of skating, dancing and entertainment at City Hall!

Ice on Whyte (January 25-27 & January 31-February 3) – The ice is so nice they run this festival twice! Enjoy the sculptures, plus music, crafts, food and more in Old Strathcona!
