Conveniently located at the beautiful St. Sophia’s Ukrainian Catholic Parish in Sherwood Park, in addition to the Shumka Dance Centre in Downtown Edmonton, classes are rewarding and well-structured with manageable sizes, and a convenient drive from any location in the Greater Edmonton area. Classes at Sherwood Park run from Mondays to Thursdays and feature high-quality instruction, a community feel, and flexibility for families looking to enrol in Shumka School of Dance closer to home. Both studios are well-equipped with sprung floors, mirrors, and ballet barres.
Since 1989, the Shumka School of Dance has trained thousands of young dancers to achieve performance excellence and build a strong work ethic. Shumka is known across Canada and has secured its place as an internationally acclaimed dance company. These dancers and choreographers are the very same experts providing Shumka School dancers with instruction while inspiring them to pursue their Ukrainian dancing dreams. With its fun, family-like atmosphere, the school is a welcoming place for youth to achieve their goals with a variety of classes and activities.
Of course, you don’t have to be Ukrainian to find your place because Shumka School of Dance is for everyone. The goal is to engage young people from all ethnic backgrounds in the performing arts, whether a child’s interest in dance is purely recreational or based on a desire to reach a professional level. Shumka School gives students a strong foundation for building skills within an inspirational community.
Ukrainian character, Royal Academy of Dance ballet, contemporary movement, and Shumka-style training are options for students at both locations. Offering Canada’s only Ukrainian Dance Syllabus, dancers move through progressive levels of training, choreography, and performance. A twice-yearly recital at the Jubilee Auditorium will showcase the development of skills and repertoire; in addition, students may be given the opportunity to perform on-stage in larger-scale Shumka productions. Experience will also be gained through performances at local community events, festivals, and care facilities, while helping to highlight the value of giving back to the community.
