It’s everything a child’s first formal learning experience should be, in a setting that will set parents’ minds at ease! For more than 40 years, Springhill Community Preschool has created a happy, “learning through play” environment for children aged 2 to 5. Class sizes are kept small, and the program is taught by two fully-qualified preschool teachers, in a setting that stimulates the natural curiosity, growth and development of the children.
Located in the basement of the iconic Queen Alexandra School in Old Strathcona, Springhill features fun and exciting classroom spaces perfect for their ‘learning through play’ mandate. Activity centres offer everything including arts and crafts, music, dress up, books, puzzles, water and sand tables and a playhouse. The separate gross motor skills room includes an obstacle course, tunnels, a teeter-totter, a mini trampoline, bikes, balls and more! In 2016, Springhill introduced Intellidance® to the curriculum, using movement and dance activities to enhance vocabulary and physical literacy both on and off the dance floor.
Springhill is fully licensed and operates as a non-profit cooperative managed by a board of directors made up of parents. The school offers an organic, nut-free snack program designed to reinforce healthy eating habits. Field trip fees are included with tuition at Springhill, and over the course of the school year, students in each age group will have the opportunity to participate in 7 field trips at no extra cost. In lieu of sales fundraisers, Springhill uses a fundraising fee program. Parent duty days are not required – rather, parent involvement is welcomed through a variety of volunteer positions.
