Welcome winter with the annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival. Honouring many cultural traditions, the annual Winter Solstice Lantern Festival illuminates the darkest night of the year with lanterns, fire, singing, drumming, music and dancing!
Everyone is invited to the FREE community events happening in three Vancouver neighbourhoods. A donation of $5 is suggested.
The processions from Leg-In-Boot Square and Vanier Park happen at 6:00pm. The Granville Island procession leaves Triangle Square at 6:20pm . Take part in indoor activities (6pm-10pm) at False Creek Community Centre. At 9:15pm the final procession leaves the False Creek Community Centre and heads to the Fire Finale in Ron Basford Park at 9:30pm.
Interested participants can sign up for workshops at Ocean Art Works (1531 Johnston St, Granville Island):
- Dec. 20 and 21 (12 :00 – 6:00pm)- Watch Secret Lantern Artist Yoko Tomita create a 25th anniversary Sun Lantern to lead the procession.
- Dec. 21 (12 :00 – 6:00pm) – Free Lantern Workshop! Turn a glass jar into your own unique lantern for the procession leaving from Triangle Square at 6:00pm
A procession leaves The Gathering Place (609 Helmcken St.) at 6pm and heads to the Roundhouse. The traditional processions from the Aquatic Centre or Cooper’s Park are cancelled for 2018. Take part in a lantern-making workshop at the Roundhouse (6pm – 10pm) and then join a lantern procession to David Lam Park starting at 8pm. The Fire Finale takes place on the Roundhouse Turntable at 9:30pm.

Please note for 2018 the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden will not be participating in the Winter Solstice Lantern Festival.
