It’s time for adventure in the Rocky Mountains! Spring break brings exciting opportunities for kids aged 8 – 18, as Bar Jo Ranch invites all horse and pony lovers to Horse Sense Day Camp. More than just an incredible experience (although it certainly is that!), this camp naturally builds empathy, responsibility, and confidence. Spending time outside with horses is never wasted — start your spring with a breath of fresh air!

Bar JO Ranch is located about 20 minutes west of Cochrane, in the Rocky Mountain foothills. They offer a safe, positive environment for children, youth, and families to experience the benefits of riding and working with horses. Getting outside and off technology allows kids to discover who they really are and what they can accomplish. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to experience new adventures and create special memories!

Spring Break Horse Sense Day Camp

No experience is necessary at Bar JO Ranch! Campers are grouped by age, size, and skill level, while camp activities focus on safety, riding fundamentals, and horse care. Each camper is assigned their own horse for a unique opportunity to build a bond with their animal. Kids may bring carrots or apples from home to treat their horse or pony, too.

Camp days are structured to ensure a well-rounded experience. Kids will learn horse safety and how to behave around horses. They’ll learn how to mount, ride, and more, with hours of opportunity in the saddle every day. From riding drills to games on horseback to Gymkhana races, all campers will gain confidence, control, and balance as they progress through the week. And they’ll love the scenic trail rides through the 320-acre ranch!

What Else?

Campers must be at least 8 years old on the first day of camp, due to insurance regulations. Bussing from Calgary and area is included in the camp fees, with convenient pick-up and drop-off locations at Central Memorial High School, Norma Bush Hockey Arena, Bearspaw Lifestyle Centre, and Cochrane High School. Pre-packaged snacks and drinks will be available for purchase, but be sure to pack a good lunch.

The benefits of working with horses are far-reaching and relevant to every part of life. There are physical benefits, of course, like coordination, balance, and increased muscle. But there are also personal, emotional, and mental benefits. Besides safety, basic riding skills, and overall common sense interaction with a horse, kids learn responsibility and empathy. Caring for horses teaches patience and problem-solving, plus kids can find like-minded friends and learn to work as a team as they develop the confidence that will support every area of their lives.

All this personal growth, fresh air, and outdoor fun sound good, right?! Make some 4-legged friends this year with Bar JO Ranch spring break camps, available during both the public and Catholic spring break weeks. Check out the details today and discover new excitement and calming encounters!
