It’s a big, bright, beautiful world out there, and with all the natural diversity of the area we live in, we can daily be amazed by the tiny details and the large-scale grandeur of nature all around us. If you have any budding scientists in your house (ages 10+), they can become scientists and be a part of the 2018 Banff National Park BioBlitz.
On Saturday, May 5, 2018, the 2nd annual BioBlitz is bringing together more than a dozen research experts and many public volunteers, dubbed “citizen scientists,” for this FREE, family-friendly event. The goal is to survey wetland sites in Banff National Park. Small groups will be doing real scientific research, observing and recording data for four different types of amphibians. These four amphibians help scientists understand the environment, as they are an important indicator species to the environment’s health and are part of a long-term ecological integrity monitoring program.
Everything you need will be provided: leaders for your family or small group, survey gear, transportation to the wetlands, and refreshments. There will also be “EcoKids Activities” at the BioBlitz Basecamp at the Cave and Basin National Historic Site.
If your kids are 10 and up and would like to participate in this amphibian survey, pre-register and sign in once you arrive at the Basecamp. Your family (or small group) will be teamed up with a scientist to survey the amphibians at wetland sites in the park close to the Banff townsite. You’ll need to come prepared for a day outside, as the program runs from 8:45 am – 4:30 pm. You will be using the iNaturalist App and website to collect observations of amphibians you discover. Download the iNaturalist App to your device and register for the project prior to the event.
If you want to be a part of the scientific fun, but can’t commit to the day or have kids who are too young, you can still be BioBlitz Basecamp Participants! Just show up anytime after 10 am and come enjoy all the EcoKids Activities at the Cave and Basin National Historic Site. Families can explore the BioBlitz in a Box, Art Jam, a mini-amphibian survey, a bison interactive display, and Leave No Trace activities, just to name a few.
Come be a part of something bigger when you join BioBlitz 2018! Kids will love being a part of a real, scientific experience as they contribute to building knowledge and caring for the amazing world we live in, from the towering Rockies to the tiniest amphibian.
