If we’re lucky, we sometimes find something that completely captures our imagination. If we are exceptionally fortunate, we find something that not only enchants us but also offers a real-world opportunity to experience it! Quidditch is a fictional game invented by J. K. Rowling for the Harry Potter series, but it has developed into a real-life game and has gained incredible popularity.

Quidditch is a sport where 2 teams of 7 players each, mounted on broomsticks, compete against each other on a rectangular pitch. The pitch has 3 hoops of differing heights at each end. To score points, a team member must get the quaffle, a slightly deflated volleyball, into one of their opponent’s hoops, but beware of being hit by the bludger! If you’re hit, you have to get off your broomstick and head to your hoops before being allowed back into play. Of course, unless you have magical abilities, you can only play what is officially known as muggle quidditch.

Calgary Quidditch Club wants to introduce kids ages 9 – 15 to this unique sport! Starting on May 7, 2019, and running for 8 weeks from 6 – 7:30 pm at the Sunnyside Community School, this program introduces youth to the game and rules of quidditch and helps them improve their skills. Kids will get a chance to play games and have lots of fun with this fascinating sport.

Kids in this program will become members of Calgary’s first youth quidditch team, the Calgary Hippogriffs, an opportunity they won’t want to miss! Registration includes participation in the Calgary Quidditch Cup, happening in Calgary on May 25, 2019, and a tournament in Red Deer on June 9, 2019.

As this is an outdoor program, send your youth in appropriate sports gear and running shoes suitable for outdoor play and a water bottle. (Some sessions may have to be cancelled in inclement weather.)

Don’t miss the chance to live your favourite book! Register now for the Calgary Quidditch Club.
