When school’s out and the kids have energy to spare, how do you keep your kids busy? PD Days can sometimes throw a parent’s best-laid plans completely out of orbit, especially in this time of COVID. Did you know that the Calgary Zoo offers virtual school programming for PD Days? Or maybe you are homeschooling and you’re looking for some amazing programming to complement your school curriculum and bring it to life. Either way, bring the zoo to you!

From March to June 2021, the zoo has adapted its school programming to accommodate students who love animals and want to discover the natural world, but can’t visit the zoo right now. You can choose from a virtual safari through one of the zoo regions or a themed zoo program.

Virtual Safaris

Go on a zoo safari from the comfort of your home! With the Calgary Zoo Virtual Safaris, you can tour a section of the zoo with one of the zoo educators. Take one safari or take them all!

Penguins Virtual Safari: Come nose to beak with the super cool inhabitants of the indoor and outdoor areas of the Penguin Plunge building. Penguin species may include Northern and Southern Rockhopper, Humbolt, Gentoo and King penguins.

Canadian Wilds Virtual Safari: Explore the amazing animals that inhabit the wilds around us. Species observed may include bighorn sheep, mountain goats, woodland caribou, wood bison, river otter, whooping crane, grey wolf, grizzly bear, black bear, cougar.

Africa Virtual Safari: Investigate the unique animals of the African savannah and rainforest. Species observed may include meerkat, hippopotamus, giraffe, lion, zebra, lemur, Malagasy boas, dwarf crocodiles, black & white colobus monkeys, western lowland gorilla.

Eurasia Virtual Safari: Discover the spectacular animals that call Eurasia home. Animals observed may include Pallas’ cat, musk deer, Japanese macaque, Japanese serow, markhor, Amur tiger, wild boar, red panda, snow leopard, Bactrian camel.

Virtual School Program Themes

These virtual school programs at the Calgary zoo are up to 60 minutes long and bring you a classroom-based program based on the following themes.

On Gossamer Wings: Follow the journey from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly and find out what the planet is like on gossamer wings. Let your mind take flight as you explore butterfly bodies, senses, life cycle, and conservation. (Recommended for grades K-5/Curriculum connections: K-2; Program available April 12 – June 11, 2021, only)

Bear Necessities: How does a wild bear find food, water and shelter? It’s a simple bear necessity! Discover how bears meet their needs and how humans fit into the story of Canada’s bears. (Recommended for grades K-8/Curriculum connections: K-2 and 4-6)

Interactions and Ecosystems: From the tiniest puddle to the highest mountain range, our world is full of ecosystems in which plants and animals interact and survive together. In this fascinating program, you’ll look at how tiny changes can have profound effects on entire ecosystems and the role that humans play in influencing the world around them. (Recommended for grades 6-9/Curriculum connections: grade 7)

Biodiversity Matters: Explore the beautiful diversity of the world around us. Investigating adaptations in animal species and visiting one of the most diverse groups of animals – the birds. You will examine why biodiversity is so important for the planet and how we are working hard to ensure species don’t go extinct. (Recommended for grades 7-12/Curriculum connections: grade 7-9)
