You’ve probably heard it said that a child’s work is play. It’s not just a trite saying; it’s absolutely true. This is especially so with toddlers and preschool-age children, as they discover life, figuring out how things work, who they are, and how they fit into the world around them. Campus Pre-School, established in 1965, is Calgary’s longest-running preschool that is operated as a parent cooperative. They know how play helps children develop important social skills, problem-solving, and academic skills and they have preschool programs for kids ages 3 and 4 years old.

The Campus Pre-School mission statement declares the desire to “provide the best possible community experience for young children and their families through its co-operative program, and assists in the total development of each child in a stimulating, play-based environment.” With years of experience and a genuine love for children, the teachers, who have university or college degrees in early childhood education and attend ongoing development workshops, guide the kids through stories, finger-plays, action games, drama, and art.

Classes at the preschool are two and a half hours long (morning or afternoon) and a typical day starts with playtime at a variety of centres, including art and playdough, sand and water tables, dress-up clothes, a fort, and a play kitchen. During circle time, a teacher leads group activities with songs, drama, discussion, and games. Gym and snack time follow and then comes storytime and outdoor play on preschool-friendly playground equipment. Tailored for a preschooler’s interests and needs, Campus Pre-School schedules include kid-friendly themes and will start your child on a life-long learning journey in a positive, supportive environment.

Campus Pre-School offers morning classes for the Junior Class (3-year-olds) either two or three mornings a week. (There is also a junior class in the afternoons that is a combined class, junior and senior on Tuesdays and Thursdays.) The Senior Class (4-year-olds) runs programs morning and afternoon, and you can also choose whether two or three mornings a week works best for your family. Tours are also available before registration.

Whatever you choose, you can be assured your child will get a wonderful start to their school life, through play, activity, and meaningful social time. Preschool is meant to be loved!
