Lights, camera, action! The curtain will rise on summer camp fun this year with the Calgary Young People’s Theatre. These camps are perfect for kids and teens who want to dive into drama, express themselves, and showcase their creativity. No experience is necessary and the camps are lead by experts in the field. Professional theatre actors, directors, and playwrights will teach your kids how to act, improvise, create a play, and more, and help them have a fabulous time doing it!
With locations in both NW and SE Calgary and a variety of camp options, kids and families simply have to choose what suits them best. Days at camp are spent learning a variety of theatrical skills, such as voice, choreography, storytelling, and character work, to name a few and the week culminates in a performance for family and friends.
Half Day, 1-Week Camps (4-6 years old)
Half-day camps run 9 am – 12 pm each day, giving your little one a chance to show the world what they’re all about! The week concludes with a fun performance. Pre-care will be available for a small fee starting at 7:30 am if needed.
Full Day, 1-Week Camps (6-12 years old)
Camp kids spend their mornings learning various dramatic skills like acting, improvisation, and stage combat, and then in the afternoons, they work with a CYPT professional theatre artist to build their very own play that they’ll perform at the end of the week! The camp runs from 9 am – 4 pm and pre and post-care will be available for a small fee.
Full Day, 2-Week Camps (10 – 17 years old)
No experience is necessary, but older kids who’ve developed a taste for the dramatic will find that this camp is the perfect next step. Over two weeks, they’ll get to build a longer play in the afternoons and experience a broad range of morning drama fun! The final performance is on the second Thursday of each camp. The camp runs from 9 am – 4 pm daily and pre and post-care will be available for a small fee.
Drama Conservatory Camps for Teens
These 1-week camps for teens aged 12 to 17 explore exciting speciality topics, allowing them to delve deeper into the dramatic world and build their skills. They can try Stage Make-up, Stage Combat, Musical Theatre, and Improvisation. The camps run from 9 am – 4 pm.
Calgary Young People’s Theatre also offers an optional lunch/snack program for busy families for full-day camps. It’s just $40/week for 2 snacks and one lunch daily! If money is tight this year, there is also a bursary program low-income families can apply for so that all kids can participate. (Call the office at 403-242-7118 x. 1 or email email@example.com to request a bursary application or for more information.) Do you have more than one child who has a flair for the dramatic? Families enrolling more than one child will enjoy a 20% discount off the cost of the least expensive registration fee!
All that’s left is to take the stage! Many of the kids who attend CYPT’s summer camps return year after year to see old friends and meet new ones. Register here to make sure your own child gets to experience all the drama, fun, and friendship!
