Strings! Percussion! It’s a Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra Adventure With Maestro Karl and Friends
January 15, 2021 - January 1, 2023
We love Symphony Sundays with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Now that we can’t head to the Jack Singer in real life, the CPO has launched a new four-part series for kids online that is free and accessible for families at home!
An Orchestra Adventure (with Maestro Karl and friends) features Associate Conductor Karl Hirzer and musicians in a fun and humorous exploration of the four sections of the orchestra, using video recorded at home, excerpts from live performances, and animation. You’ll also take a few side trips to discover interesting facts about music and famous composers while you learn about woodwinds, strings, brass, and percussion.
All four session are available here and you’ll also find helpful printable resources.
“We miss bringing students to the concert hall to experience live classical music and wanted to find a way to engage them while they’re at home,” says Hirzer, who also leads the Calgary Phil’s education and outreach concerts. “Kids are so curious and enthusiastic about music that we decided to capture that adventurous spirit and take them on a fun — and funny — musical journey through the instruments of the orchestra.”
This project was made possible by the generous support of the Rozsa Foundation and Calgary Foundation.
