Kids Will Discover the Delicious Side of Healthy Living With Poppy Innovations Summer Camps

Poppy Innovations Summer Camps (Family Fun Calgary)

Kids love to get in the kitchen, and this summer they can learn to cook with Poppy Innovations Summer Camps. They will have fun with food while learning about healthy living, and as parents, we know that these skills will help them throughout their whole life! Poppy Innovations aims to build healthy communities by empowering and supporting kids and their families through “edible education.”

Poppy Innovations offers interesting, hands-on summer camps, for either a full day or a full week, to help kids learn cooking skills that will establish healthy habits for life. Kids ages 8 and up will get into the kitchen and learn to make healthy food choices, develop fundamental food preparation skills, such as measuring and how to read recipes, and ultimately gain confidence in the kitchen. Campers will love trying out their culinary creations and you’ll love not packing snacks and lunch! Kids ages 4 – 8 can join the evening Gardening Club with a parent and get their hands in the soil while they learn to grow their own healthy food.

One Day Camps

One-day camps take place over 4 days (July 4, July 5, August 1, & August 2, 2019) in the South Health Campus Wellness Kitchen from 9 am to 4 pm. You have 2 camps from which to choose.

Farm to Fork day camp offers an ag-mazing day in the kitchen, as kids learn about urban agriculture and how food grows. They will cook delicious recipes and topics include pickling foods, preparing meals from local produce, and using and growing sprouts. At the end of the camp, kids will leave with all the recipes they cooked, their new sprout master, and a new appreciation for local agriculture.

Kids on the Go day camps blend food skills, active living, and nutrition education. Life-long habits are established during these formative years and this day camp focusses on healthy eating. Kids engage in hands-on preparation of a power-packed breakfast, an easy school lunch solution, and a healthy snack to recharge in the afternoon. What’s more, this camp includes one hour of physical activity with the YMCA!

Week-long Camps

Full week camps take place starting July 8, July 22, & August 5, 2019, from 9 am – 4 pm at the Parkdale Community Association. Each week is a different topic.

The Farm to Fork camp offers an ag-mazing week in the kitchen, as kids learn about urban agriculture and how food grows. They will cook delicious recipes and topics include pickling foods, preparing meals from local produce, and using and growing sprouts. At the end of the camp, kids will leave with all the recipes they cooked, their new sprout master, and a DIY craft for future gardening fun.

The Kids on the Go day camp blends food skills, active living, and nutrition education. Life-long habits are established during these formative years and this day camp focusses on healthy eating. Kids engage in hands-on preparation of a power-packed breakfast, an easy school lunch solution, and a healthy snack to recharge in the afternoon. There will also be ample opportunity for outdoor play.

The Culinary Masters day camp is calling all budding chefs! If your child has a desire to get creative in the kitchen and is already familiar with basic cooking skills, let them discover their inner foodie. Campers will use mystery basket ingredients to create their own recipe and learn how to prepare nutritious dishes with unique ingredients. Children will take home recipes they make in class, as well as a class photo in a photo card.

Kids’ Gardening Club

Kids often have an idea of how the kitchen works and the Poppy Innovations Kids’ Gardening Club gives kids a chance to play a part in growing their own food, too! Children ages 4 – 8 can get their hands dirty over 10 weeks of the summer by learning how to sow, grow, harvest, and prepare food. Learning gardening and cooking skills will empower them to make healthy food choices and inspire their natural curiosity for new fruits and vegetables. The program is offered at the Parkdale Community Garden and includes parents, as well. The planting bee is May 29, 2019, and then the program runs every Wednesday evening in July and August from 6 – 7:30 pm.
